Wilson Teaching Learning And Millennial Students Summary
“Teaching, Learning, and Millennial Students” by Maureen Wilson discusses how college professors can use effective teaching strategies in the classroom to best impact long term learning methods of Millennial Students. Wilson breaks her article into two sections; Elements of Effective Teaching and Teaching Millennials. In the Elements of Effective Teaching section, Wilson explains the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education by Chickering and Gamson. Each principle has its own subheading where she explains each strategy with supporting evidence. In the second section, Teaching Millennials, Wilson discusses the personal qualities of the millennial generation. The personal qualities or main factors of millennials that Wilson felt was important each have a section heading as well. Although Wilson ties together a convincing argument, she does not present her ideas in an effective manner.

On my first time reading the article, I lost focus that the goal of the article was to relate these methods to helping millennials. She does a poor job of integrating millennials into her argument into this section. When she does integrate the personal qualities of millennials, she does not make an effective argument for that particular principle. For example, in the Student-Faculty Contact subheading, Wilson (2004) argues how professors who interact with students out of classroom related activities have more of an impact on their students’ success (p. 60).     Catherine Rampell’s “A Generation of Slackers? Not so much” starts her essay out by quoting strong and negative opinion statements made by people who believes Generation Y are lazy, dumb and etc. From the beginning of her essay Rampell had used a Tone that set out to make readers believe like she was attacking Generation Y but ironically transition the tone of her work into a defense towards generation y. It proves her defense by quoting evidence to support her views of Generation Y (“Today’s young people are very focused on trying to work hard and to get ahead”).     With technology easily accessible throughout their lives, it is easy to say the Millennial Generation had it easy, and they did. They take for granted the ease of access and the quick flow of information, a thing unlike any prior generation. Some may even say that they abuse their use of technology by using it at inappropriate or unnecessary times. Next, the generation’s expectations are far too high when looking for a job. David Bass takes this side of the argument. Although a Millennial himself, Bass describes a generation forcing themselves into massive debt, and then blaming outside factors. “... many reasons for my generation’s predicament… a direct result of our own choices.” (Bass, 31). With low employment rates, the Millennial Generation would rather go into debt than finding a job. Millennials will go to an undergraduate school for a four degree. Afterwards, unsure of what to do, they will then go to graduate school amassing an even larger debt. During this time period, the Millennial Generation will have also gained a large credit debit, setting them even further behind. These “self inflicted wounds” force Millennials to move in with the parents as they can’t afford, or can’t function, on their own.     “You could definitely tell they thought, “Who is this person and why does he think he can do something that took me years to do?”” (Ellin 205). She also uses examples from studies to show her argument that the generation of millennial is more “revived”, yet “needy”. (Ellin 205).
