Winter's Bone Analysis
In Winter’s Bone by Daniel Woodrell, sixteen year old Ree Dolly takes on the role of being a mother, father, and sister to her two brothers Sonny and Harold. The Dolly’s live in the Ozarks and do not live an easy life by any means. They live their life dealing with drugs and crimes. Along with Ree being affected by her surroundings her brothers have to go through the same experiences she has gone through. Therefore, Sonny and Harold are affected by their surroundings because their sister takes care of them since they have no parents and the location they live in has shaped them to who they have become. Sonny and Harold have grown up having their sister tell them right from wrong all their life because Jessup and Connie do not exist physically

They have been growing up in a bad place with people who don’t have any good morals and portray selfishness, so the boys could potentially end up like everyone else. However, Ree demonstrates someone who doesn’t do drugs or sells drugs and constantly expresses to her brothers to have ideals and understand what’s important in life. Everyone located near Ree, Sonny and Harold remain a bad influence. Ree clearly does not want the boys to go down the drug dealer path when she tells Gail, “But he’ll make Sonny what I hoped he wouldn’t be. ‘Of course he will. That’s why he wants him. That’s why they all want sons. What about Harold?’ ‘Harold don’t shine for him’ (155). Their location and family could potentially make the boys into something that they shouldn’t inhabit which shows what Ree fears. Ree and the boys differ from the other family members that live near them. In a conversation with Little Arthur he asks Ree, “Wanna snout some crank? ‘Nope.’ ‘Blow some smoke?’ ‘Nope.” (55). Ree does drugs but not as much as everyone else in her family. She knows that she shouldn’t do them because if she does drugs her brothers will start doing them. The location that Harold and Sonny live in affects who they are. As they grow up they will undergo constant pressure to do and deal drugs. Hopefully with Ree being in their lives, she will shape the boys into not becoming dealers and to not get into drugs even though it will remain a challenge because they continually see what people do with it in their
