The two stories that interest me the most are Sonny’s Blues and A Good Man is Hard to Find. Between Sonny and the Misfit, they both had commons and differences from each other. Since they had different inner emotional distress, this led to a huge difference in their lives.
Sonny and the Misfit both had a miserable childhood. Sonny’s father was an alcoholic-addicted man, and they often fought each other. Sonny’s mother died when Sonny was young. Sonny started to use drugs and end up in prison for a long time. The Misfit was in prison because he had told that he killed his father. However, according to the book, “I never was a bad boy that I remember of, but somewhere along the line I done something wrong and got sent to the penitentiary” said by the Misfit. Both Sonny and the Misfit were in prison because they were lack of guidance.
They also had massive difference in their characters. After prison, Sonny started to face his miserable life through music. The blues music gave Sonny courage to face fear, and to face misfortune of life. On the contrary, after the Misfit escaped from prison, he chose to forget his past. “I forget what I done, lady. I set there and set there, trying to remember what it was I done and I ain’t recalled it to this day” said from the Misfit. He did not remember killing his father or he did not think killing people were a crime.
The commons between their moral standards were they never gave up chasing their goals. Sonny never doubted his faith of music. The Misfit never doubted his moral standard. According to the book, “No pleasure but meanness”, this is what he was chasing. The difference was that Sonny’s way was more civilized, but the Misfit’s way was evil by common
