The book of Job is about a “blameless and upright man” who God tested. The test consisted of Job losing his family, land and health, due to a bet between God and Satan whether Job would keep his faith after he lost everything; his health, his wealth and his family. The main theme throughout the story of Job is that you will be rewarded for suffering and it is a test of faith. However , in my opinion this is not always the case as nowadays people who have no faith are rewarded with fame and fortune, whereas those who keep faith go a painful life and are not rewarded. Also the basic jewish belief is that there is no life after death so rewards should be given in this life.
Initially, in the Jewish faith, God is seen as a covenant God; one who rewards people for keeping faith and following the 10 commandments. One of the basic and earliest covenantal agreements were between God and Abraham where God says “you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you” God promises Abraham that he will multiply the Jewish people and give them land in return that every male should be circumcised. This shows that like the story of Job, people have to suffer before they are rewarded. However, many Jews do not get rewarded and have not got “given” their promised land, they are fighting over Israel. This shows that the story of God is of little help as Jews are suffering yet they are not receiving an award.
Furthermore, the book of Job fails to explain the devastating event of the holocaust which contradicts the nature of a God as a covenant God. As God should be protecting the Jews instead of killing them, even the ones who keep faith. And it cant be that they would be rewarded in the hereafter as they do not believe that there is a life after
