“Woman Hollering Creek” is a story that tells the unfortunate tale of domestic abuse that many women face today. Readers get a first hand look at the mindset behind a woman facing serious domestic abuse. While many may argue that the author, Sandra Cisneros, portrayed Cleofilas as weak or timid, it is clearly shown that she is incredibly strong in her given situation. It is revealed in the final section of the story that Cleofilas was facing horrific abuse by her husband, possibly for a long period of time. Yet when she is given the option of suicide, as shown on page 225 paragraph 30 when Cleafilas is being called to by La Llorona while by the creek, she does not take the chance. One could argue that a weak woman in her situation would end it there, but Cleafilas is strong and continues to live along with her children and, although it is not specifically stated, protect them as well. Immediately after she is described to be holding him as he weeps, a moment that clearly shows a situation many, if not all, women face. It is that even in moments of pain and shock, they must still put the needs of men first. Even though Juan was the one who had attacked Cleafilas, she still ended up being the one to comfort him. This act shows her motherly nature as well as the dark twist that requires her to take care of her abuser. The tone and structure of the sentences change in this section as well. Paragraphes are shorted with Cleafilas fast and fleeting thoughts. The climax of Juan slapping her is describe in vivid detail as the scene plays out in slow motion. This scene is very sudden and shocks the reader, much in the same way Cleafilas is shocked. This is unfortunately something woman all throughout the world face in everyday life, and it is likely not changing anytime
