Women Hollering Creek
The story I chose was “Women Hollering Creek” by Sandra Cisneros which tells a story of Cleofilas, a woman who tries to emulate the life she sees on television and on soap operas. She leaves her home in Mexico and marries a man who takes her to Texas. He works a low paying job and beats and cheats on her, even when she giving birth to their children. Cleofilas, comes to see this is not the life she wants to live. She is living isolated from her family with no friends or community to help her when she needs it the most. She comes to see that the soap operas she has grown to watch throughout her life, our actual lies and that life does not imitate art. She finally comes to conclusion that she must leave her husband because of the way he treats her and she longs to be back in Mexico with her father and family. She gets help from some kindly strangers who help her escape her abusive husband. She seems to marvel at one of the strangers that helps her, Felice, who drives a pickup truck that she pays for herself. She sees in Felice, what she wants, to have life of her own that is not dependent on a man. T

I think there is strength in his Sandra Ciseneros’ words. She telling women everywhere that you can do it for yourself and that you don’t have to stay in a bad relationship. Felice, the stranger who helps Cleofilas, comes to symbolize the possibilities for all women. She is saying you don’t need to depend on anyone. As long as you have the drive and the motivation you can make it on your own. The central idea of Sandra Cisneros story is that women have to take control of their lives. Cleofilas became a supporting role in her own life. She did not have a voice and could not find it in the life she was living with her abusive husband. Once Cleofilas had discovered who she was and what she wanted she was able to move her life for herself and her children in a better direction. Cleofilas at the end becomes the leading role in her own

Second, Cisneros also uses metaphors to explain how her great-grandmother becomes an independent woman. After she is forced to marry this man she becomes independent because she had to do something she never wanted to do which was marry. An example of a metaphor from the text that was used to show her independence is,”She looked out the window her whole life, the way so many so many women sit their sadness on an elbow”(Cisneros). This quote explains how unlike any other women Esperanza’s great-grandmother stared out a window her whole life to pass her sadness by while other girls would just hold their head up with their arm.…

She does not really fit in and explains that she doesn’t fit in the social economic classes: “I’m amphibious. I’m a person who doesn’t belong to any class” (111). She starts talking about her affair with a married man, Drew, and about how when his wife was giving birth they were making love in their bed. Cisneros gives the character power by feeling like she had control over the pregnancy and had a connection to the birthing. This makes her seem in control but she isn’t. She is just telling herself these things for her comfort. Cisneros makes Clemencia more powerful in this story; the last time that they meet to make love, she hides a lot of gummy bears around where only Drew’s wife would notice (118). She wants to break them up but her efforts are in vain. Just like any other affair the one who is cheating is only looking for a thrill, but does not want to lose his or her family if they would they could simply get a divorce. In the story Clemencia wants to believe that they can be together, and that they should be together. Later in the story Clemencia seduces her lovers’ teenage son. He was still a high school student, but that did not stop her from trying to make love to him. She wanted him to love her the way she loved his dad. In the end Clemencia seems to get over her love for her lover. She tries to bring comfort to herself by saying “Sometimes all…

Several of the stories in Woman Hollering Creek by Sandra Cisneros revolve around the theme of feminism and religion and their ability to create inner conflict. A few of the characters experience this inner conflict as a direct result of the societal pressures put on them by whom they live with, themselves, and beliefs, whether they’re their own, or someone else’s. While the whole book itself is a testament to female oppression and the way society perpetuates the oppression itself, there are a select few of the short stories that really focus on it. The rest only have undertones. In many of the stories, the oppression from the community around them causes inner conflict within the characters. The way Cisneros organizes the book exposes the ways…

The novel I read for book club is called Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul, which is full of short stories about growing up, written by various authors across the country. Although the majority of the stories were nice to read, one stood out to me the most, called She Didn’t Give Up on Me. The story is about a foster girl who goes from house to house in order to find a family. After she’s unsuccessful a few times and believes she is unlovable, she finally finds a family she fits in with.…

Clara, Blanca, and Alba remain the “main focus” while the person they love in this case Esteban, Pedro Tercero, and Miguel become more of secondary characters. There is a lot of description told on base of the women’s actions such as each of their birth as well as what happens to the that unjustifiable like sexual violence and physical too. Each of the female characters in The House of The Spirits is a strong willed person and they do not let them selves be brought down by men. "Many children fly like birds, guess other people's dreams, and speak with ghosts, but that they all outgrow it when they lose their innocence"[8]. From what I tried to depict the women were percieved by me to be the “innocence” of human life in the novel. All the women fight for what they want in a non-violent way. They are not as violent as women who fought for their rights in or U.S History, rather they are more quite and make the changes more subtle without causing any revolts. It gives the opinion of Isabel Allende in a discreet way in opinion. She wants us to percieve from the story that what women do has a more permanent effect than that of the men. What women teach about health, and how to manage things doesn’t dissamble as fast as those of the men who are in the government and their plan and changes do not last forever and actually it brings more problems than…

Rulfo focuses on Paramo’s control over Susana’s life by attributing the possessive dialogue of “I wanted to have it all. Not just part of it, but everything there was to have…” to Paramo in reference to his relation with Susana, (Rulfo, 82). The repetition of phrase of wanting to “have” all or everything depicts Paramo’s internal desire to own Susana and be the sole subject of all her thoughts and feelings. By presenting this idea of possession in relation to the most intimate relationship developed in the novel, Rulfo illustrates how men in the Mexican society aim to control the lives and the hearts of the women through even their most caring actions. Rulfo’s message that men desire to own their love is further developed when Paramo refers to Susana as the “crowning achievement,” (Rulfo, 83). Since the word “crowning” is often associated with crowns that serve as symbols of power, the phrase “crowning achievement” classifies Paramo as the king and Susana as a trophy or prize in society. Rulfo’s connection between Susana as an inanimate object reinforces women as the symbols of subjugation that represent the loss of personal identity in…

The message to this book is never to give up and have hope. I know this is the message because Salva is forced to run away from his family to get away from war. He walked for hundreds of miles trying to get to a safe place such as the refugee camp in Ethiopia. On his journey, Salva lost a friend; he lost his uncle; he was ignored and was considered the runt of the group, but that didn’t put him down. He never gave up, and he never…

One of the most vital things to notice in the story is the repetition in how everyone in the story perceives Mrs. Mallard. Mrs. Mallard is viewed by everyone as delicate…

Just some decades ago, women were seen as an inferior and weaker human being who totally depended on a man in order to survive. These women lived an unhappy life, full of prejudice and insecurities. They were punished for something they had no fault: being born a female. In that time society denied them the right to control their own life. They were just another object, and they were expected to hand over their dreams and goals in order to dedicate themselves completely to satisfy their husbands, maintain the house, and give birth to many children. In the story The Chrysanthemums we meet Elisa Allen, a woman who faces the struggles of living in a society that rejects her for being a woman. I am against this attitude towards the female gender because we all have the right to fulfill our dreams and goals, to lead our own lives, and to pursue our own happiness.…

When we go into the second chapter, she discusses the theme into another perspective. It made me realize that in my family I do have a member that does this whole thick face black heart. My brother, he always has an attitude that shows that he does not care what people have to say and does what he wants. He shows no fear in anything, even if he is afraid he will find a way to take it and learn to take the fear away, which I personally find amazing. In the book it says that you should understand your self. That part amazed me as well, after I read these two chapters I thought to my self I should start little by little adding this concept to my life. To find my self a little more, to not worry about others, not to fear, and to be a powerful women.…
