They have carved the details out and worked with them to make them as smooth as possible. It is detailed; you can see the female shapes in the breasts and in the hip area. When you go down to the detail level, especially the face and hands are prominent. The head is a lioness head and the eyes are small and intense. Material: Aphrodite De Milo and Peplos Kore are both made of marble. Aphrodite de milos missing pieces of marble and absence of attributes made the restoration and identification of the statue difficult. A whole range of positions have been suggested: leaning against a pillar, resting her elbow on Ares' shoulder, or holding a variety of attributes. She is popularly thought to represent Aphrodite, because of her half-nakedness and her sensual, feminine curves.…

The body of the figure is long and oval shaped. The body of the sculpture is the largest part of the figure. The shoulders are rounded and there is a long oval indentation that resembles a neckline for a dress. Where the neckline is exposed, there is a layer that covers the figures breasts and appears to be similar to an undergarment for the dress that the sculpture is wearing. On the right side of the…

Hausa sculptures were thought of as wonderful because of all the different materials used to make them. A Hausa artisan used clay, wax, copper, zinc, and led to make a bronze sculpture. The bronzes of Benin were created using a lost-wax technique. In this technique an object was sculpted in wax, then covered in clay and baked. The wax was then filled with molten metal. Artists often portrayed warriors or…

My response to Carole Feuerman’s pieces Dress Rehearsal and Splash at first was overall shock because it looked like that pieces of the body where physically cut off of a live person’s body and put on display as art. The reasoning for being drawn to this particular piece of art was because of the substantial amount of detail that this artist put into these three distinct pieces; the life like feel of the artwork was astounding. From my close viewing of the work of art, I realized how much time and hard work Carole had to put into these pieces to make them look like it was an actual woman’s leg, hands and face. Carole Feuerman made the Dress Rehearsal and Splash sculptures in 2009, using resin and oil materials, and is currently located in the Amarillo Museum of Art. The artist uses two different types of methods for displaying her art.…

First, Nike of Samothrace is touching down lightly on her slightly bent right leg while her left leg trails behind. Her torso twists, leaning to her right as her shoulders incline slightly towards her left. Her wings are blown back behind her, the right, rising higher and more windswept than the left. Her dress billows over her thigh, chest, and stomach, clinging to her body while it gathers between her striding legs and around her hips, creating a contrast between smooth skin and textured cloth. The ship’s prow, set at angle to the rectangular precinct, emerged from the monument as though it were actually sailing through water, with the statue turned slightly inward toward the Sanctuary. The statue exemplifies the movement, gesture, and rich texturing of the finest Hellenistic sculpture. The Nike of Samothrace is carved from creamy colored Parian marble, while the ship is made of dark blue Rhodian marble from Lartos. While at the other side there is a totally different goddess. The most important representation of Coatlicue is preserved in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico. This statue has hands and feet claws shaped, she has a skirt of snakes intertwined and chest covered by skulls, hands and human hearts. The head of the goddess is replaced by two snakeheads found that stimulate two streams of blood flowing from her neck cut. Coatlicue, especially, has many symbolic elements such as the one of the snakes covering her body symbolizing the era in the Aztec civilization. Also, the hearts are symbolizing the sacrifices from the same period of time. And as this, there are many more important elements that complement and make both goddesses as important as they…

At the El Paso Museum of Art I saw many beautiful and wonderful paintings and sculptures but the “The Portrait” was the sculpture that caught my attention the most. “The Portrait” was sculpted by Frances Bagley an American artist born on April 7, 1946 in Fayetteville, Tennessee. Frances Bagley lives and works in Dallas, Texas. “The Portrait” was created in 1997 and it is made out of stainless steel and marble. I believe that “The Portrait” is an interesting piece of art because it resembles exactly what the title says. It is a portrait of a the artist or a portrait of woman. The sculpture has shape and contour which is the shape of a woman like in a night gown. The sculpture has mass. It also has texture because in the stainless steel you can see that is shine and smooth and the marble is not finish so you can see that is rough. It has color because even if the marble is rough it has different colors. It has proportion and scale in the part of the body from top to bottom as well it does have the proper scale to simulate a woman sitting down. “The Portrait” has design, unity, and aesthetic because the whole piece is appealing to eye since it resembles the shape of a woman with the different pieces of rough marble place inside of the stainless structure and even if the materials does not have a glamorous touch the sculpture does captivate the viewers attention because of its has beauty. But most important the portrait has content and iconography because the piece is portraying a woman that is always beautiful even in her simplest form and it also resembles the meaning that a woman has in society as a strong person because it gives life to their children and as the foundation of the family. In my opinion The Portray has the meaning of what a woman is. She is hard as stainless steel because she knows that she always have to be there as an inspiration for her family or her children. She…

This sculpture was discovered off the coast of Cape Artemision at an ancient shipwreck. This piece is now being held at National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece. This piece belongs in the classical time period because you can see the focus is on the anatomy of the body not particularly how the body looked when it moved. Also, Zeus does not have much emotion on his face, which is another characteristic of classical art. Not only does Zeus have a stoic smile but he also possesses other qualities that make him a classical piece of work. His body is proportioned perfectly and he is aligned in a natural stance, which makes him look life like. It is very interesting to see how the Greeks knew the human body well enough to be able to sculpt the perfect proportions on a medium like marble or bronze. The Atemision Zeus is made out of Bronze, which was one of the preferred methods to sculpting because bronze was fairly easy to mold. The height of this Zeus sculpture is 6’10” and that again demonstrates how these sculptures were made to look very grand and…
