WOMEN AT THE WELL
THE WOMAN AT JACOB’S WELL

Text (Referral) John 4: 1-42
Text (Read) John 4: 6-19

Come with me….. if you will…… to the well of Jacob….. and stand with me as I analyze this Samaritan woman’s situation.

What do we see here? Here we see unmerited favor….. we see unconditional love….. we see acceptance….. we see sacrifice….. and yes….. we see a risk. Here we see where God took an ordinary woman……… and placed her in an extraordinary situation.

Look at this un-named Samaritan woman…….. she stopped by to let you know…….. that even if people don’t remember your name….. they will surely remember…. what you did. Look over your shoulder and say……… but God. Look over your other shoulder and say……. Her situation…… is yesterday’s news.

Now…… it was not by accident that Jesus was at the well during the same time that the Samaritan woman was there. Usually women go to the well to draw water during the morning and the evening….. but this woman went to the well during the heat of the day. My sanctified imagination tells me that she was attempting to avoid an encounter with those who knew her reputation. This is symbolic to our ability to avoid people……. Yet our inability to avoid Jesus. WE SERVE AN OMNIPRESENT GOD.

I come this evening to…. PRAISE….. the unnamed woman at Jacob’s well….. and to draw from her story….. lessons for women in the church today.

I praise her because she knows who she is….. and what she believes. She knows how to protect herself through aphorisms…… and how to concede a point when it matches her experience. She is a woman of heart and head…… spontaneity and caution….. earthy savvy and spiritual longing……… She has much to teach us.

The Samaritan woman is the example of the reality….. that no one can sink so low….. as to be below the offer of salvation.

Watch the Samaritan woman approach the well…… she carries a clay water pot in her hands; but she also carried a much heavier burden in her soul.

There is a wonderful peace…..

She was released to her family and she rejoices and praises God many times throughout this final chapter. Her reflections of her captivity are powerful. She tells how she has seen the “extreme vanity of the world”. How she has been wealthy and in need of nothing and then suffering from sickness, hunger and having nothing but sorrow and affliction (Rowlandson 288). The greatest example of Rowlandson’s testament to her faith was when she attests to her audience: “Affliction I wanted, and affliction I had, full measure (I thought), pressed down and running over. Yet I see when God calls a person to do something, no matter how hard, he will always carry them through and show that they have gained something from it” (Rowlandson, 288). Rowlandson set an example to all those who read her story that the mind is a powerful thing; having a faith in God provided the strength and courage she needed to face even the hardest challenges and allow her to…

During the time of German reign in Europe, Mother Maria Skobtsova assisted and sheltered as many Jewish people as should could. Skobtsova worked hard to try and help Jews escape the threat of concentration camps and death, while risking her own life. In 1942, 7,000 Jews were arrested and put into a local Paris sports stadium and Mother Maria found a way to infiltrate the stadium and comfort the kids by bringing them food and attempting to sneak them out by means of garbage cans. Mother Maria showed that refusing to obey, comply, and conform to society in charge, showed her ultimate obedience to God, but also showed that it’s good to do the right thing rather than the ordinary thing. The easy decision Mother Maria could of made was to sit back…

As a young girl Jacobs learns of her fate to come. “When I was six years old, my mother died; and then, for the first time, I learned, by the talk around me, that I was a slave” (Jacobs 10). Jacobs blesses her first mistress, Margaret Horniblow, for teaching her to read and spell. From this early age Jacobs begins to see that language and reality are intertwined. Through this interconnected thinking Jacobs discovers how to decode both the word and the world. This causes bitterness towards her mistress Margaret, when she teaches her the bible. “My mistress had taught me the percepts of God’s word: ‘Thou shalt…

I defied John by going to the trials. Banded with Abi, banded with a heathen and now I am left to walk this lonely road only to face another. To be scorned for under oath I spread the lies that plague this town. I feel God’s light flicker against the whirlwind of lies. Name after name. All talkin’ of spirits. I have sworn my name to the presence of an evil I cannot see.…

As she appeared on the horizon, a screeching, loud voice penetrated the quiet and serene scene, " Open the way, and I promise ye to have a fair sight of the lady's judgement hour, from now till meridian," a man of the court of God promised. The crowd made way and watched with derision as Katherine's soft and fragile figure hesitantly passed through the murmuring, jejune horde, she stood out, not alike the others, something in the way she set forth towards the pillory appointed for her punishment. In the holt, surrounded by wilderness, the beasts inside the honorable Pilgrims became unleashed, morphing and joining the howls untamed, feral creatures in ways alike themselves. There she stands, at the pillory, in a long, dull attire alike all good Puritans, her visage, still as a mask, no wrinkle or imperfection, on the inside though, Katherine was trembling with fear, pain, dismay, counting down minutes till her shameful day is over. She, however, knew that this guilt and agony will haunt her for as long as she lives, the shame…

Through research I soon discovered many answers.[2] The roots of this allegorical interpretation reach deeply into the earliest Christian literature. Writings in the second century a.d., Irenaeus and Clement each saw the good Samaritan as symbolizing Christ saving the fallen victim from the wounds of sin. Origen, only a few years later, stated that this interpretation came down to him from one of the elders, who understood the elements of this story allegorically as follows:…

Given a no face saving alternative the country boy did not know what else to do but to say, “just leave it as is and I’ll try my best to give $10,000 this year”. The minister seemed quite happy with the boy’s decision and said, “we will take your picture and hang it in the hallway with the pictures of all our other $10,000 contributors. We have quite a few of them. You can also choose your favorite scripture verse under your picture”. The young man needed to think only a moment and said, “Beneath my picture as a $10,000 contributor please place this verse – “I was a stranger and you took me in”.…

This girl, a heathen in a place where many were Christian, used often to hear her neighbours extol the Christian faith and devotion to the service of God; wherefore she asked one of them how God could best be served and with the least hindrance. She was told that they best served Him who removed themselves farthest from the things of the world, as in particular the hermits who had withdrawn from the city to the wilds of Thebais.…
