In 1790, during the French Revolution equal rights were not only being fought for the common man, but for slaves, religious minorities and women. This was the first time women’s rights was brought up for discussion, stating that women deserve the same rights and opportunities that are given to men. Until this point, women were treated as second-class citizens and were considered to be property of their husband, father or society. Women were considered weaker than man and unsuited for a political life and they did not have the intellectual capacity to address the political issues. Men felt that woman belong taking care of the home and if they were allowed to take part in political issues, then women would not have time to take care of their families and their homes. The workforce of women increased from 27 percent to 37 percent. By 1945, one out of every 4 married women worked outside of their home to help fill in the gaps in the workforce due to the men servicing in the military. The traditional role of the “happy house wife” changed and women were now a vital part in keeping the economy flowing and helping out in the military were needed. In 1954, the civil rights movement started and many African American women risked their lives and worked aimlessly for the civil rights of African American people. Woman like Rosa Parks stood up for what she believed in and paved the way for many other African Americans to do the same. However, history overlooked many of these women for their bravery. Historians are finally starting to acknowledge the role women played in the help of the civil rights movements. Today, women have made even more strides. Many women are now surviving in the military with equal rights and equal pay. The Defense Department decided to lift all gender-based restrictions in the military. Women will now be allowed to enter into combat arms units with men. They will be allowed to hold the same position as a man and there will be no gender pay gap at any rank
