Women Should Not Lift Weights
Fitness clubs such as Leisure World, Club Fitness and other popular exercise facilities have become very popular in the last 20 years. Both men and women have been using weight lifting for years, some women even compete in body building contests for a living. Some people in the world today believe that women should not lift weights. Others see no harm in women lifting weights. There is absolutely no reason why certain individuals should put women down for lifting weights. There are tremendous benefits to a woman when she lifts weights. Women should certainly start or continue to lift weights.
What is weight lifting exactly? Weight lifting is when a person has a goal to increase their strength or muscle size by lifting heavy equipment such as barbells and dumbbells. There are many forms of weight lifting that include: Bodybuilding, Weight Lifting Sport, and Strength training. People choose the best type of weight

Some women do not want to start weight lifting because of the injuries they think might happen to them. Studies show that weight lifting can cause stress fractures, muscle soreness, and some strains to the body. There is one myth that can cause stress to women and make them not want to start any type of weight lifting. The myth is that by weight lifting, girls will turn out all bulky like a man, which is not true (Stephenson). The last disadvantage about weight lifting is that some girls are afraid to lift weights because they think boys will not like their masculine side. Most guys think when a woman lifts weights it can make her a lot more attractive, but other guys not so much. A lot of girls are scared to try new things because they are constantly caring what other people around them think or say and the women just do not want to be judged. A lot of boys think it is bad for a girl to become stronger than them, but it is a great accomplishment that shows their hard work and dedication

    One of the key points to evaluate here is the argument that males biologically have an advantage in the majority of sports. In the vast number of cases this is true, however this should not be a reason why females are either discriminated against or feel pressurised to not participate in a sport. In a study done by McArdle, Katch & Katch in 1981, it was shown that among Western adults, men are around 50 percent stronger than women1. One thing that is important to point out here is that the average female has not been encouraged to participate in activities that would develop the growth and potential of muscles in the same way men have been encouraged to do. The stereotype that women should be slender and with little muscle does not aid this particular viewpoint on women’s sport. This leads on to the point of the history of female sport and the view on women’s roles in society. The earlier you go back in history, the more the viewpoint has existed that women are there to aid the husband in the house and bring up the children whilst he is out earning the money. This was very much the case and still is in some cultures, which inhibited and inhibits women from participating in sport because they simply do not have the time for it. As Spears (1978) said in his study, “Only the exceptional woman was involved in sport”2.
