Pride and Prejudice gives us a good look into the life of women of the 18th century England. Here we’ll take an in depth look of women few social rights including Gossip, marriage, and family. Gossip for women in the 18th century was very important. Because most women could not do much as it was, it was one of the few things they had for themselves. To be honest women would most likely be convicted of a crime if they ever talked about the wrong person the wrong way. (Maybe even personally murdered) Anything women did was very sensitive.
As equally as it is today, gossiping was also highly used for stereo types. For example the “good-natured, gossiping, Lucases” mentioned on page 446. Just like we may still treat people as our friends even though we know they gossip or talk about you. Most likely this is caused by the fact we have done it ourselves at one point or another. It is just as common as gossip is today, even though it’s mainly used for different things. Gossip back then was one of the few ways it was possible for women to be sociable, a way to spread around marriages and relationships. (Dancing is practically used as a relationship status.) Connecting with marriage a woman’s family gave her status, wealth, and offering(s). When a women was to be married her family would normally give her a small share of land/wealth to give her soon to be husband. Besides money and land her family also plays into her reputation.
