UNDERSTANDING THE MANAGEMENT ROLE
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this assignment is to show a greater understanding of the role of a middle manager within an organization and the way in which it works.
THE ORGANISATION IN RELATION TO ITS PURPOSE AND ITS STAKEHOLDERS
Hair @ Hall Garth, is a small hair salon located within a well established country hotel. It has been trading since September 2012 and is gradually becoming a popular salon and building up a regular clientele.
Hair @ Hall Garth aims to provide an individual professional service tailored to the client’s needs. To offer consistency to both new and existing clients. To become a well recognised salon and make a profit.
The salon is based around a flat structure (appendix A) with one person responsible for overseeing all the functional areas within the organisation.
The main advantage of flat organisation structure is increased co-ordination and timely spread of information among different departments. The top management is closer to the middle management which makes it easier for the upper management to communicate effectively to the lower level management.
Flat organisations as oppose to hierarchical structures are more effective in terms of improvement and empowerment. Flat organisations require increased synchronisation and use of teams and work group setting. The policies are easier and quicker to implement in flat organisations. The disadvantage is that organisations have to cope with the challenges of greater flexibility in the form of opposing views of team members. The group and team conflicts need to be handled efficiently.
Functional areas within the salon and some of their responsibilities:
Sales and marketing – involved in achieving targets, creating new markets and increasing sales.
Human resources - Responsible for arranging staff
