Working Memory Model
Alan Baddley’s working memory model explains what goes on inside the short-term memory and the working memory. It consists of two temporary storages for short-term memory depending on the type of information. The visuospatial sketchpad stores the visual and spatial images for manipulation. The phonological loop maintains auditory memory by speech rehearsal. Visual/spatial images and auditory information are stored in separate locations in working memory. Another component in Baddley’s model is the central executive which monitors and manipulates the two working memory buffers the visuospatial sketchpad and the phonological loop. The central executive has multiple important jobs like adding or deleting items in the buffers above, selecting items to guide behavior, retrieving information from long-term memory and transferring information to long-term memory. It works like a train it goes back and forth between short and long-term memory. The central executive only manipulates information while the two buffers manage the information. The buffers are material specific the visuospatial sketchpad only stores object and location material while the phonological …show more content…
For example, if a person is given a phone number and is asked to remember it the person will repeat the numbers over and over again in their head. Most people can remember 5-7 items +/- 2 but without rehearsal, a person could only retain the information for 2 seconds before it is forgotten. This is why internal rehearsal is extremely important because without it we could not remember anything. If the rehearsal is interrupted it can mess with the memory and cause the person to not remember anything. There is also the idea of word-length effect where longer words require longer rehearsal to remember. For instance, I would remember the word dog quicker than the word superstitious because it is a shorter and simpler

The working memory model is the part of the short term memory which is governed by the ‘central executive which monitors and coordinates the operation of the store systems; Phonological loop and visuo – spatial sketchpad. The phonological loop allows sounds to be stored for brief periods. The visuo spatial sketchpad allows visual and spatial information to be stored for brief periods. The two slave systems within the WMM are completely separate and can work individually.…

The researchers argued that shallow processing focuses on the superficial features of the information (e.g. whether a word is in upper or lower case) resulting in a fragile memory trace with the information unlikely to be stored for very long. The LOP model challenges the importance of rehearsal as being the only way in which STM may be transferred to LTM. Craik and Lockhart point out that long-term memories are laid down every day without being rehearsed. Their levels of processing model suggests it is everyday information (with meaning or importance) rather than repeated processing (repetition) which is the key to LTM. While shallow processing focuses on the superficial features of the information and is unlikely to be remembered, deep (semantic) processing focuses on the meaning of the information and is generally more likely to be remembered.…

Working Memory is STM. In contrast to the Multi-Store Model, where all the information goes to one single store (Unitary store), there are different systems for the different types of information. Working Memory consists of the Central Executive, The Visuo-Spatial Sketch Pad, The Episodic Buffer and the Phonological Loop. These all link back into the Long-Term Memory (LTM).…

Baddeley and Hitch (1974) developed an alternative model of short-term memory which they called the working memory model. The working memory model consists of four components. The central executive which controls and co-ordinates the operation of two subsystems, the phonological loop and the visuo-spatial sketchpad. The central executive controls attention and coordinates the actions of the other components, it can briefly store information, but has a limited capacity. The phonological loop consists of two parts, the articulatory control system and the phonological store. The articulatory control system (the inner voice) where information is rehearsed sub vocally and has a capacity of about 2 seconds. The phonological store (the inner ear) stores information in speech-based form, the speech input is held for a brief duration. The third component, the visuo-spatial sketchpad, mentally manipulates images and space, for example it is used when a person imagines the encodes visual information in terms of separate objects as well as the arrangement of these objects in one's visual field. The final component, episodic buffer, receives input from many sources, temporarily stores this information, and then puts them together in order to construct a mental episode of what is being experienced right now.…

The Working Memory Model (WMM) is a theory by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974. The theory replaces the idea that there is a single Short Term Memory (STM) from Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968), it suggests that the STM is a flexible multi-component system. The WMM suggests that the STM is controlled by the Central Executive (CE) which controls attention, planning and synthesising information. The Central Executive is a flexible system which means it can process audio, visual and sound information, it also has a limited capacity.…

The working memory model (WMM) has four components. The central executive controls and monitors the operation of the other 3 components. It also allocates attention. The phonological loop is sub-divided into 2 smaller components, the articulatory control system, where information is rehearsed sub vocally or in the inner voice and the phonological store where speech is held for a very brief duration in the inner ear. The third component is the visuo spatial sketchpad which deals with visual information obtained by the sensory organs (eyes) or recalled from the LTM. The fourth component is the episodic buffer which acts as a store for visual and acoustic data and the retrieval of long term memory. It has an unlimited duration and capacity.…

Baddeley also found that when participants were shown words and asked to recall them immediately, they did so much better for sentences than for unrelated words which supports the idea of the episodic buffer- an immediate memory store for items that aren’t visual or…

Candidiasis is an infection caused by Candida fungi, especially Candida Albicans. These fungi are found almost everywhere in the environment. Some may live harmlessly along with the abundant "native" species of bacteria that normally grow the mouth, gastrointestinal tract and vagina. Usually, Candida is kept under control by the native bacteria and by the body's immune defenses. If the native bacteria are decreased by antibiotics or if the person's immune system is weakened by illness (especially AIDS or diabetes), malnutrition, or certain medications, Candida fungi can multiply to cause symptoms. Candida infections can cause occasional symptoms in healthy people. Candidiasis can affect many parts of the body, causing localized infections or larger illness,…

There is a unique distinction between short-term memory and working memory. Short-term memory is used for holding small pieces of information over a short period of time and the working memory is part of the short-term memory that deals with immediate processes and scientists use it to refer to sustained neural activation. So even though the they directly correspond to one another, they have distinct differences that set them apart such as the tasks that each one is used to accomplish. Scientists here looks at a theoretical approach to the constructs of short-term memory and working memory.…

“Bartleby the Scrivener” by Herman Melville is a short story about an elderly lawyer’s experience when he hires a new scrivener for his office. The setting of the story takes place in 1853 New York City, a metropolis with Wall Street capitalism at its center. Much like the lawyer's other employees, Bartleby is described as having eccentric tendencies. Bartleby is a middle-class man, who must work to make ends meet through monotonous tasks and following orders of his employer (the Lawyer/narrator). Eventually, Bartleby ceases to follow these orders.…
