Introduction: Risk of being a nurse Nurses don’t expect their job to be a breeze. Fatigue, stress, and working daily with sights, smells, and sounds that would make just about anyone sick—all of these come along with being a nurse but somehow they seem to make the best of them. One thing no nurse should have to deal with is violent behavior from the people they are trying to help. Nurses are the health-care workers most at risk for workplace violence, with female nurses considered the most vulnerable. Nurses are exposed to violence too frequently—primarily from patients, patients’ families, and visitors. In another survey of ED nurses the numbers are even higher; eighty-two percent say that they have experienced physical violence and one-hundred percent say that they have experienced verbal violence (Stokowski). This violence causes fear, frustration, lack of trust in hospital administration, and decrease in job satisfaction. Since I want to go into nursing I thought that this would be an interesting topic to analyze. I have chosen two very different media that both make the same argument, one better than the other. The first media I chose was an article published by National Nurses United titled, “Nurses Speak Out at Cal/OSHA Public Hearing: Urge Speedy Passage of Violence Prevention Regulations”. In this article it gives an overview of a public hearing along with more general information on the topic. Both of these media hope to achieve a violence protection plan in every state, which is very important to nurses in today’s day and age. The twitter account is more effective with what she is trying to get to, with using ethos, pathos, and logos in an effective manner. While the article though has good points it is not as effective because it lacks facts and statistics. Again with todays violence rate throughout the nation everybody needs protection. Nurses sacrifice a lot for us as patients and we shouldn’t do anything to put them in harm. With nurses now having a fear to go to work the nation is seeing less and less nurses and people applying to nursing school. With that happening and violence in the workplace rising we will eventually run out of nurses and have nobody to take care of us. Take a stand and stop violence against
