What is a World Heritage Site?
A world heritage Site is a natural man-made site, area or structure that has been recognized as being of outstanding international importance and therefore as deserving special protection. Sites are nominated to and designated by the World Heritage Convention (an organization of UNESCO).
Who makes the decision to give a site World Heritage Status?
World Heritage sites can only be nominated by the national government of a country (also called a State Party) that has signed and approved the World Heritage Convention. However, governments do not decide whether a site in their country is inscribed on the World Heritage List. That decision is made by the World Heritage Committee, a group of elected representatives of 21 of the States Parties based at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris.
