When British rule came into today 's Zimbabwe (former Rhodesia) in the late 19th century, they found “peaceful people living in various sized city-states.” The people inhabiting this area, known as the Shona tribe, had seen little of European people up to this point, and were easily convinced of Britain 's trickery to move in and take control of their land. Up to this point, the Shona tribe and their religion was based on ancestor spirit possession using music mostly from the hand-held mbira. British rule highly disapproved of this, and in turn left many Zimbabweans alienated form their ancient culture.[1]…

By the end of World War I in 1918, artist had a remarkable change in their styles of art. My initial thoughts about this painting is that it seems to be a posed portraite done around the year 1500 judging by the subject's clothing. It appears that the two men were positioned so that they could lean on the table, so I assume the artist painted them while they stood in front of him instead of relying on memory. The two men are dressed very well and give the impression of being explorers or possibly sailors. The detail is amazing so I think the original must be very large for the artist to be able to incude such fine detail. I feel there must be some kind of a message that they artist is trying convey by the inclusion of the large and misshapen skull at the men's feet, it seems very out of place and a very odd addition to a portrait like this.…

Postmodernism is best understood by defining the modernist ethos it replaced - that of the avant-garde who were active from 1860s to the 1950s. The various artists in the modern period were driven by a radical and forward thinking approach, ideas of technological positivity, and grand narratives of Western domination and progress. The arrival of Neo-Dada and Pop art in post-war America marked the beginning of a reaction against this mindset that came to be known as postmodernism. The reaction took on multiple artistic forms for the next four decades, including Conceptual art, Minimalism, Video art, Performance art, and Installation art. These movements are diverse and disparate but connected by certain characteristics: ironical and playful…

The initial assignment is a necessary one and for a good reason. Why? Simple, it forces each student to begin to analyzing and enjoy the art in their community that they might not notice otherwise. I for one, am not a huge art fan. However, the assignment does bring me a step closer to becoming one. Swapping out lenses to take notice of the many different works of art in the community is truly eye opening. Instead of glancing over the painting in the lobby, for instance, now I take a moment to interpret the piece of art and the significance of the work. Now, most important to me, when looking at a piece of artwork, is understanding at conception the cultural influence on the artist. Analyzing it from that context allows the viewer to receive a history lesson as well as enjoy the work for a variety of other reasons.…

Although different pieces of art come from different eras and different artists, what makes a composition fine art is its ability to evoke emotions in the viewer. These emotions can range from misery to ecstasy and everything in between. At the beginning of the song, it wasn't singing instead she was talking. Then she started to sing right after she was done talking. I couldn't follow the translation because it sounded like Latin or French. I kept listening to it over and over but I couldn't understand what the words meant. She does have the most beautiful voice though. She sounds like an opera singer. I noticed when she hit high notes she sounded off key. It was way too high pitch and much louder, and stronger vocal. At the point when she went back to normal pitch, it sounds so much better and was a little quiet. The background sounds like music in a catholic church. I believe it is an acapella music with solo vocal without instrumental sound. In this song, the most striking feature is acapella music with monophonic texture. I think this song is successful because it is very calm and smooth background although some pitches are way too high for her to sing. She reached her highest pitch at 3:18 in the song.…

The Ancient Near Eastern gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York contained a widespread of art pieces that regurgitated reminiscence of materials learned in the early weeks of World Art I. The first art form that I became engrossed by was a stone relief titled Orthostat relief: lion attacking a deer. This relief was said to be accredited to the Hittites culture during the Neo-Hittites Period, and dating 19th century. Its precise geographic origin is Syria, Tell Halaf. The subject matter of this relief, as stated in its given title, is of a lion viscously attaching a deer, or buck. Other orthostats found Syria, Tell Halaf also share a comparable theme of vulgar executions, and frequent use of animal subjects such as lions, boars, stags, and hybrid creatures (Halaf, Tell). The description of this orthostat relief says that it is inscribed, although I could not identify where the inscribing were, “Palace of Kapara, son of Hadianu.”…

There are multiple cultures in the world. Within these cultures there are traditions like dance, food, music. Another one is art. Art is such a powerful part in cultures. Africa has art that is so elegant, structured, and complexed. Even today's modern African art is still so complexed and traditional. These ideas come from artists who take traditional ideals in African art and make a new movement of african art. Like, Gilbert “Bobbo” Ahiagle and El Anatsui. There are also many books, articles, galleries and museums that have evaluated african art and have depicted the the art culture and have analyzed it critically. The Smithsonian Museum of African Arts have exactly done this and has made african art a whole new movement, not just showing sculptures and a paintings but doing so much more. There is also one piece of african art called “19th Century Kid (Queen Victoria)” by Yinka Shonibre that has a story behind it and how it was made that is so intriguing. But amazing art does not start without artists who have created such amazing piece of work.…
