World Trade Center

The movie World Trade Center is about the second terrorist attack on the World Trade Center which occurred September 11, 2001. Over three thousand lives were lost along with first responders (fire, police, EMS, medical, military, etc.). The two tallest buildings, known as the twin towers and several other buildings were completely destroyed. This would become the second of its kind of attack in America’s history. The first occurred “Friday, February 26, 1993, when Middle Eastern terrorism had arrived on American soil—with a bang” (“FBI 100 First Strike”, 2008). Forrest Gump would have optimistically said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get" (Zemeckis, 1994). One of the rescue workers commented on going into the scene, “God was using the cloud of debris, smoke and dust to shield what they were walking into.” This truly was the type of devastation that would be difficult to plan for, but in hind sight several steps of action could have been taken to at least minimize the damage. First Step would have been to equip a system where the fire sprinklers would have gone off at time of impact, as well as sound some type of sound system to communicate to the people in the buildings an attack had occurred. This building housed numerous key corporations and certainly after the attack from 1993 this should have been (SOP) Standard Operating Procedure. Step Two would have been to have counseled personnel in this building along with fire, police, medical, hospitals, etc. on what to do should another terrorist attack hit our country. Our television and radio stations should have an emergency system in place also. Step 3: Would be to have heavy equipment teams and personnel in place in New York and other major cities

Murrah building collapse. “Carl Spengler [was] a third-year resident in emergency medicine, Spengler was just blocks from the Murrah Building on the morning of the bombing, ‘We went to breakfast, and we were just sitting there talking, and all of the sudden it felt like the building about got knocked over. A man, seconds after the bombing went off, opened the door and said, ‘I think the Federal Building just collapsed. ‘So i got up, and by the time I got to the door, debris was landing in the street. So we drove four, five, six blocks, but we couldn’t go any farther because there was so much debris in the street. I was standing looking half of this building gone, and I kept thinking I was going to see hundreds of people in the building screaming and hollering. Except for one car alarm going off, and the fire burning in the parking lot next to it, you could hear the birds singing. It was absolutely that quiet’ “ (McRoberts). Without a doubt McVeigh made people think on impact. When the building exploded many people did not think, they decided to be courteous and pull people out and try to save the living before they died. McVeigh impacted many people, some of those people were not in the building when it collapsed, but they were in it after. “Don Hull [who] has spent 14 years a hostage negotiator with the Oklahoma City Police Department. But on the morning of the Murrah Building, Hull found himself performing and entirely different task: trying to find life in the rubble. ‘You’d be going along, and then you’d see a body part kind of sticking out of a pile of stuff. You’d dig that person out. They weren’t alive you’d feel this dripping, like water was dripping on you but it wasn’t water. My worst nightmare to this day: my daughter was 3 at the time, and I remember going through the rubble and I found a hand. Just a hand. And it was- it fit in the palm of my…

On April 15th 2013 the unexpected happened near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) where detonated, at the feet of the spectators while they were cheering on the runners, in an interval of just seconds and a distance of approximately 200 feet. Three victims were pronounced dead on scene and there were close to three-hundred injured. Luckily the Boston marathon was highly equipped and prepared for the worst and had a lot of first responders and medical personnel in close proximity to come to the victims’ aid very quickly. This research paper will address how effectively the responders managed the incident, how they could improve in future incidents, the parts of the incident that went well and the…

Terrorism provides a unique challenge for emergency responders. Although they share many similar qualities as regular crimes, there may be an added danger. One such danger is the use of weapons of mass destruction. Responding to terrorism falls primarily into the realm of federal law enforcement; however, major incidents will often require the use of multiple agencies from multiple jurisdictions. A disorganized response force could spell doom for the victims. This is why the Incident Command System is so important in the prevention and mitigation of disaster effects.…

The gunmen, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold could have been prevented from doing more damage if the agencies had already had some type of emergency response system set in place for such an event. There should have been more communications between the two and scenario based solutions on how to resolve terrorist acts. With that being said the agencies could have familiarized themselves with other agencies in the area and establish more of a solid line of communications. The outcome of the Columbine shootings may have been different. A guideline supported by scenarios illustrating different levels of terrorist acts could have been set in place to handle the Columbine shootings. A joint command could have been installed for such a tragedy through which both agencies can respond properly. In regards to providing safety to the schools, a constant security measure should have been put in place to protect students and faculty members. This could have manifested into providing more security guards based on student population or installing a camera system for the huge campus. Most importantly, an updated map needed to be accessible at all times as well to be used in resolving such an incident. From what public agencies can gain from studying the Columbine shootings is that communication is vital in handling emergencies as well as joint dialogue/cooperation between relevant groups involved is a…

There were a host of responses done right that put all of what has been learned so far into perspective. As with any potential threat, emergency responders were previously trained in the active shooter scenario. Training from local law enforcement officers was accurate and up to date with current protocols and adjusted methods for immediately entering and clearing the building. An investment of outfitting all officers with portable, personal first aid kits proved to be necessary life saving devices, which surely saved the lives of a majority of the…

For more than a day afterwards, failed to activate the specialized teams. In the days and weeks following the attacks, the ARC was continually criticized for its management of the financial donations (Ferrell, et al., 2011). The communication of how much of the funds would go to the actual relief of the victims and their families, failure to communicate appropriate points of contact for each agency, and electronically accepting the donations capacity during the incident should have been handled differently. Effective planning would help with future communication on events as…

There was wider damage then just that to the World Trade Center buildings and on the scale of ordinary disasters it was heavy. For thirty years or so the Twin Towers had stood above the streets as all tall buildings do, as a bomb of sorts, a warehouse for the prodigious energy originally required to raise so much weight so high. Now, in a single morning, the towers released that energy back into the city. Massive steel beams flew through the neighborhood like gargantuan spears, penetrating subway lines and underground passages to depths of thirty feet, crushing them, rupturing water mains and gas lines, and stabbing high into the sides of nearby office towers, where they lodged. The phone system, the fiber-optic network, and the electric power grid were knocked out. Ambulances, cars, and fire trucks were smashed flat by falling debris, and some were hammered five floors or so down from the street into the insane chaos erupting inside the World Trade Center 's immense ten-acre foundation hole, seventy feet deep, that was suffering unimaginable violence as it absorbed the force of each tower 's collapse. Less than 15 minutes after the terrorists struck the nerve center of the U.S. military, the horror in New York took a catastrophic turn for the worse when the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed in a massive cloud of dust and smoke. The structural steel of the skyscraper, built to withstand winds in excess of 200 miles per hour and a large conventional fire, could not withstand the tremendous heat generated by the burning jet fuel. At 10:30 a.m., the other Trade Center tower collapsed. Close to 3,000 people died in the…

The HR got there, and got to work right away, which is exactly what they need to do. When Hurricane Katrina happened, they didn't expect it to be as bad as it was, so they weren't prepared. An act of terrorism carried out by the group, Al Qaeda, destroyed the lives of thousands of people. Although disasters such as the one that occurred on September 11, 2001 cannot necessarily be prevented, people can prepare for them as they would any other emergencies. Drills and practice are the most important aspects of emergency preparedness and are crucial for survival in disaster situations. In the book, 102 Minutes, by Kevin Flynn and Jim Dwyer, stories of what went on inside the towers are shared. By reading the book, the readers can tell that there were many issues with planning inside the World Trade Center which created more problems throughout the catastrophe. Due to the fact that not enough…
