“There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added the experience of the soul”. Arnold Bennett there is a strong belief that decision should be based upon reasoning rather than emotions but where does this reasoning come from? Emotions are always primary, after one sorts out their emotional reactions then comes the intellectual response and a decision is made. This is why many people are in the belief that emotions get in the way of reasoning. When we gather importance to something we attach feelings not conclusions or reasoning.
There is always a debate if emotions are something positive or negative. Robert Solomon, which is a philosopher, made a statement saying “ emotions are judgements about the world” and the more one thinks about it the more true it becomes. When one walks through the streets alone in the dark one usually gets a little anxious or fearful and increases their speed in walking to try and get home quicker. If one hears a noise they are not familiar with their heart will automatically start to beat faster as they experience the emotion fear. This emotion is a judgement to their current situation, not feeling safe. You did not get to this judgement through reasoning but through your emotions. You walked faster because you believed you would be gone quicker if someone was there or if there wasn't anything you just walked faster. This is a logical and reasonable response to ones emotions.
Emotions help you know what you feel and want as well as what is right from wrong. When one hurts themselves such as burning themselves accidentally they will learn through their emotion of pain that they will not do it again.
All of this can easily be reversed to show how reasoning clouds emotions. An example would be a piano
