Writing A Jazz Concert Review

For my second listening report, I chose to go see Miroslava Katzarova Jazz Quartet at Upstairs club on Mckay street in downtown Montreal. It was a fantastic performance that consisted style Jazz music. Since this was a high-end jazz club, the cover was fifteen dollars, So I was expecting a really good show. Much to my satisfaction that is exactly what I got. The players were outstanding and all the show was very short, they certainly were able to fully express their talent as a group. The only downside to the show was that they only spoke in french so I was unable to hear the names of the songs in the set. I know it’s not my place to complain about that because it is a french bar, but it still made it difficult to follow. When I approached them afterward, one of them said they would email me the tracklist and I still haven’t received an email.
The group consisted of four members which included: Miroslava as the vocalist, Rumen Toskov as the pianist, and a drummer and bass player whose names were not mentioned. As for instrumentation, there was definitely a lot of cool sounds that were represented in this performance. The drummer used a clave in place of the snare drum to give the latin jazz sound. I got exactly what I paid for. Last time the show was free and it was sub par to what I would expect from professional jazz musicians. They overdid their solos and made the songs entirely too long just to show off each player’s soloing abilities. As a result, the show lasted an hour and a half and left me feeling disappointed. In contrast, this group at the upstairs club gave a concise, well-rehearsed performance that left everyone in awe including myself.
