Trim and Megan Lynn Isaac, I had a lot of ‘Ah-ha’ moments. Most of my issues with writing without a prompt sentence made much more sense. They wrote “It has been suggested that part of the reason why first year college students struggle with invention may be due to widespread standardized testing practices that require students to respond to a pre-formed writing topic in limited ways (Hillocks 64).” I sat back thinking of how many times, during my entire schooling, did I actually have to come up with the topic to write about –none. How is that possible that I never had to choose a topic? I had to go to the library when I had to do reports. I did not realize at the time that I committed plagiarism because none of my teachers were about that. It was just about showing that you researched what topic was given to you. There was no free writing. Sadly, I see the same thing happening to my daughter. All of her essays are prompted from reading something and given the topic. In Writing with Style, Trimble had a section about listening to your feelings. Trimble wrote, “If you can’t honestly say ‘Now this is something that I think is really important,’ you’re a fool to write on it.” That made me laugh when I read that! I love writing but I only write about things that I feel passionate about outside of school! I always thought you had to write papers not for you but for the
