Explain why they are important (250 Words): The first item that I found interesting in the document was the question that Sieyes puts to the reader. He asks the question "what is a nation?" His response is a clear and concise definition of what truly defines a nation state. He makes a point of stating that a nation is "a body of people who join together to live under common laws and be represented by the same legislative assembly." This point is key as it is highlighting the importance of the people and not just the power of the monarchy. I believe that this was left out for a reason. If he was to go about telling people to take up arms and to start murdering nobles and royalty, he would have been immediately arrested and tried for committing treason. The fact that he does not once mention how to achieve this goal leaves the document somewhat lacking inspiration. Also within the document Sieyes does not once mention the fact that he himself is a member of the upper classes being a clergyman. I am not sure of the exact reason for this, but it could be perhaps due to the fact that the people of the Third Estate might have feared that it is some sort of government ploy to capture any revolutionaries that may exist in France. With the fact that Sieyes is a clergyman, one would have expected him to make reference to a divine intervention in the public's strive for equality, but there is no such reference at all through the document. It is my belief that Sieyes never really had any interest in the church, but he used his position as a clergyman to raise his political views in public journals and newspapers and to also get an inside view on the goings on of the First and Second Estates.
