The theme of Dominican history is the focal point of the novel. In the opening pages Diaz explains that this novel is for “those of you who missed you mandatory two seconds of Dominican history” (Diaz, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, p. 2). In an interview with Slate Magazine Diaz explained that he had to read hundreds of books about the Trujillo regime, as well ask numerous Dominicans for local stories. This is where many of the nicknames Diaz uses in the novel to call Trujillo originate. He refers to Trujillo as “the failed cattle thief”, “T-zillo”, and “El Jefe” (Diaz, The Brief Wondrous life of Oscar Wao P. 110). The importance of understanding the way people felt about Trujillo is a crucial aspect to understanding the significance of what Diaz is trying to explain in his stories of Oscar’s family. Diaz uses an epigraph taken from the La Nacion newspaper to explain the impact Trujillo had on the people. “Men are not indispensible. But Trujillo is irreplaceable. For Trujillo is not a man.…

“Napping – she got home a few hours ago.” I followed him into his bedroom and looked to my mom’s side of the bed, the one next to a window. It must have been late because lamp lights from the parking lot streamed through the cracked blinds. This socioeconomic status greatly affected Negi’s childhood as she could barely go outside. Although Ramona had an established job in Puerto Rico, she essentially had to start all over again. She shared the following with Negi, “‘Here you have to prove yourself all over again,’ … she tried hard, which impressed her supervisors, and was moved up quickly” (Santiago 246). Ramona also instilled this hard work ethic into her children when it came to academics because she wanted better for her children. She told Negi that she was not working hard to support their life in New York for them to get factory jobs like she had. This is a big goal of many immigrants. They work hard for their children, constantly being knocked down and getting back up, so they can have a better life than they had.…

The spring of 2014, by that time every morning when you walk outside your house you can feel the sea breeze and even when it’s cold, you close your eyes and smile, because it warms your heart. Now if I close my eyes, all I can do it’s relive that moment over and over again. The readings titled "Death without Weeping" and "When Does Life" provide quite shocking yet fascinating information regarding how different cultures and societies define when a child is considered a person. In "Death Without Weeping" the author, Nancy Schepper-Hughes, describes how poverty and desperation in Brazil's shantytowns became the primary reason for many mothers' indifference to the deaths of their infant children. According to Schepper-Hughes, the extreme poverty, high fertility, and poor ecological conditions were all factors that inevitably contributed to the casual routineness regarding so many young children's deaths. One of the most shocking parts of the article was the story of a little boy named Zezinho. Schepper-Hughes describes…

    A strange party

Last night, I dreamt I was at a party. As I went into the room everyone's eyes turned towards me. I could feel myself going red with embarrassement. Some of the women gave me really black looks, as if I'd seriously offended them. I got a drink and looked for someone to talk to. Everyone had their backs towards me, then, quite out of the blue, my grandfather walked into the room and came over to me. I told him what had happened, and he tried to reassure me. "I expect those women are admiring your dress", he said. "They're probably green with envy." I relaxed and we chatted about this and that. Then suddenly, my grandfather stopped talking and went as white as a sheet. "What's the matter?" I asked. "You shouldn't really be here," he whispered. "You've had a black mark against your name ever since you admitted you couldn't swim." Suddenly I saw red. "I've had enough of this," I screamed angrily. Again everyone looked at me. "This is my party and if you can't be nicer to me, you can all leave now!" I woke up feeling anxious. The phone was ringing. It was my grandfather. That was strange enough because he only rings me once in a blue moon, but what he said was even stranger: "I'm having a party next Friday," he said. "Can you…
