As grades go down teachers, parents and educators are wondering how to solve this problem. One answer they have come up with much research is year around school. However, the potential benefits of year-round school are very little and are outnumbered by the cons. The raising utility bill, scheduling complications and ironically no academic improvement are some of the many negative outcomes of year round school. True, year around school has a lot of benefits but with all the pros comes all the cons, and because of this year round schooling should be banned in all public schools.
As it was previously stated, year round schooling causes a rise of utility bills. One might think because school building …show more content…
are being used all year long that the money invested to build the building wouldn’t be wasted but in fact according to Year-Round Schooling an online article by Lynch, Matthew, “...the average electricity bill for homeowners in the summer months goes up 4 to 8 percent.” So if a school were to be operated in the summer as year around schools are, then on top of the regular school bills, the school would have to pay extra costs just for utility costs like cooling. Many public schools would not be able to afford this because of the lack of funds offered in a public school. On the same note, schools will not be the only ones to pay a higher cost for education. Parents that live in a specific area with year-round schooling will also pay the consequences similar to the school. If these parents have young children they will need someone to look after them while they work. The local babysitters, usually high schoolers, wouldn’t be able to look after the children for long periods of time (i.e. they do not have the traditional Summer break), so these babysitters will charge a higher price for their services. Babysitters would usually work in the summer but now have to balance it with school. Children who live in an area with only public schools shouldn’t be forced to work during the school year just because they didn't have any other choice of school.
Second of all, children lose materials that they have already learned over summer break because of the time away from school. But instead, year round schooling allows children to lose materials they have learned in a shorter period of time. Nevertheless, down time is very important for growing children as Year-Round Schooling an online article writes “...childhood development experts believe that particularly when it comes to younger students, time off in the summer months is a vital component of healthy development...pleasant weather of the summer provides a perfect opportunity to get outside and experience childhood.” Year-long schooling deprives children of this healthy benefit and for that reason, those types of schools should be banned. With year round schooling vacation is harder to plan for people with multiple children in different schools. They will have a hard time planning family vacations because a child with year-round schooling will not be able to have the 2 months off that a traditional school offers. Speaking of vacation some teachers depend on a summer job to help augment their income. If they have short breaks then it will be harder for them to acquire a job that is only for two to three weeks and be able to hold on to it and work regularly. Year round schooling may seem very beneficial at first but it is very important to look at both sides of all the arguments
Finally according to Purdue University Calumet “...year-round education can improve the academic performance of students who cannot depend on their home care to help them with learning.” In any case above all, the biggest myth that year round school improves academic performance is actually false.
It may sound logical but Dr Von Hippel has debunked this myth after completing an experiment. He states, “Students in “year-round” schools don't learn more than their peers in traditional nine-month schools... A sociologist at Ohio State University found that, over a full year, math and reading test scores improved about the same amount for children in year-round schools as they did for students whose schools followed a traditional nine-month calendar.” There's no academic improvement and on top of that many people believe that year round school is longer than a normal school which is also false. They have the same amount of days as a traditional nine-month high school however Instead they have “tracks”. So track 1 could have school for 3 weeks then they would have vacation for 3 weeks while track 2 has 3 weeks of school after coming back from vacation. This also limits who is seen by who every day if two people’s schedules do not cross. Public students should be given what's best for them. If year-round has no academic improvement then why should summer be taken away? At least summer benefits students with nutrients from the …show more content…
sun.
To conclude year round schooling is not beneficial for many reasons like its costs, loss of vacation, inconvenient schedules and the fact that there are no proven developments in academic performances.
Children who live in an area with year long school and those who cannot afford private school shouldn’t have to be forced to go to a school that does not benefit them. Paying to go to school is an option. People pay for those schools because it benefits them. The traditional high school calendar has been used for many years by many school because it works. Public school should not force something upon its citizens that does not benefit them. So maybe instead of opting for a longer school year educators should improve the quality of time put into the
education.
