First of all Yogi Berra was a son of italian immigrants, born in Missouri. He grew up playing baseball on neighborhood streets. He knew well how to play the sport, and at the age of 18, he joined the New York Yankees. Moreover, he hit a home run in his first big league game, what made him more famous and became one of the greatest players in baseball history. During his career, he received the Most Valuable Player Award three times, and many other important rewards. However, he was a humble person that dedicated his life to charities, youth organizations, and philanthropic efforts. He is from Brazil, and even as a child he dedicated himseplf to the sport. And at the age of 15 he captured the world's attetion by leading Brazil to victory in the 1958 World Cup. This phenom was so popular that the Nigeria Civil War made a temporary truce to watch him play in a exhibition game. But it was not just fame, he also has worked to support, specially, the children's organizations. For example, the UNICEF and the ABC trust, a group that provides education and better opportunities for children living in poverty. Another organization that he helps, is in his home land, the Little Prince Complex, a medical facility that provides health services for young people from disadvantages areas. But one thing the differ from other athletes is that he donated hIs entire year's income to children's
charities.
The last and novel athlete is the Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci. She born in the small Romanian village of Onesti, where she took up gymnastics and discovered her talent for it. She always worked hard to become a top gymnast. And she made it. She won nine olympic medals, five of them gold, and in 1933 she was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. But in 1976, she became the first gymnast to receive a perfect score of 10 at the Olympic Games, what it was thought that was imposible. However, after she retired from competition, she dedicated herself to charity efforts and to helping young gymnasts achieve tehir dreams. She serves on the board of directors for Special Olympics International, which helps young people with intellectual challenges to develop their abilities. Also in the Muscular Dystrophy Association that cure and treat neuromuscular diseases. And in an organization that encourages social change through sports.
