For example, in the film, American History X, during the basketball court scene, the characters were illustrating active bigot considering that they played race against race, and the winner won the rights over the entire court everyday from there on; to further elaborate, the other group of people, the losers, would be forbidden from playing on those courts again. Therefore, this scene displayed active bigot since the white Americans in the film believed they were superior and should dominate the basketball courts. Also, both races applied racial language during their arguments as well as passive aggressive, physical violence. Similarly, prejudice are thoughts or feelings about an ethnical or racial group. Moreover, Robert Merton categorized people based on a diagram, which intertwines as well as divides various viewpoints in regard to prejudice and discrimination. For instance, people who are both prejudice and act on discrimination are labeled as an “active bigot”; however, those who are neither of these two are “all-weather liberal” considering that their ideology is based on the notion of racial equality. In addition, in the film, American History X, during the dinner scene the father exhibits “timid bigot” according to Merton’s chart of prejudice and discrimination considering that he attempts to persuade his son that equality is hardly obtainable; therefore, people are hired based on their race, not the ability to efficiently preform the job, or given task. Furthermore, authoritarian personality is a state of mind or attitude characterized by a belief in absolute submission to one’s own authority along with the oppression of one’s subordinates. Additionally, my thoughts on the future of racism is that I do presume that it will diminish as time progresses through every generation of human beings considering that notions, such as homosexuality as well as feminine equality, that were once considered taboo are now becoming embraced along with empowered by society.
