The Historical Delicious Log The first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Christmas, or even the winter season is probably presents, or sweet treats. For many people, the Yule Log is the main focus of this winter holiday season. It may not seem like it, but the Yule Log has a very interesting history and religious meaning. The Yule Log also has a very interesting transition into a delicious cake, that is featured on in celebration of the winter season. The Yule Log originated in Europe, but spread all over the world. It is in ancient symbolic object of the season, and came to us from the Celts. It is cut from Oak tree which symbolizes one of their gods (THE YULE LOG). THE YULE LOG article says, “An ancient rhyme of unknown origin reflects the importance of the Yule Log on this sabbat: May the log burn, May the wheel turn, May evil spurn, May the Sun return”. Holly, mistletoe, and evergreens were all used to decorate the entire log. They not only made the room smell good when the log was burned, but they represented the intertwining of the god and goddess who reunited on the Sabbat (THE YULE LOG). The log was commonly burned in the hearth of the fireplace, but small pieces of wood from an oak tree were also used. The Yule Log is a remnant of the bonfires that European Pagans would burn during the Winter Solstice. The ceremonial bonfires burned were used to represent the return of the Sun. After the Yule Log was burned, the ashes were gathered and used as a charm for protection, fertility, strength, and good health (THE YULE LOG). During modern times not everyone has a fireplace big enough for a Yule Log. As an alternative, three holes were dug in the log, and candles were placed in them.
