We will examine 6 types of Archetypes, the Hero, the Old and Wise Guide, the Long Journey, the Evil Tempter, The Amazon, and the Triumph and Return Home.
In the ancient battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing overwhelming odds, their bravery and sacrifice inspired all of Greece to bond against the Persian enemy.
Our first archetype is the hero, King Leonidas. He and the citizens of Sparta are given an ultimatum by messengers sent by King Xerxes. They are to submit or face Xerxes’s invasion forces. “This is Sparta”, exclaims Leonidas as he kicks the messengers into a well.
Our second archetype is the Old and Wise Guide, the Ephors and the Oracle. King Leonidas consulted the Oracle at Delphi where the old mystics tell him after they consulted the Oracle that he cannot go to war. “Sparta cannot go to war, you must not go against the Carneian”.
Our third archetype is the Long Journey. Despite the Oracles orders, King Leonidas and his army of 300 Spartans journey to Thermopylae also known as the Hot Gates. Along the way they meet up with several other Greeks and prepare to battle the Persian armies of Xerxes. “Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time”, says King Leonidas.
Our fourth archetype is the Evil Tempter, King Xerxes who likens himself to a God. His motive is to take over Sparta, its people and all of Greece. He promises Leonidas great power if he surrenders. The Spartan king refuses and this infuriates Xerxes, “There will be no glory in your sacrifice. I will erase even the memory of Sparta from the histories.
