Cancer is the disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body. Cells are the very small units that make up all living things, including the human body. There are billions of cells in each person's body. Cancer happens when cells that are not normal grow and spread very fast. Normal body cells grow and divide and know to stop growing. Over time, they also die. Unlike these normal cells, cancer cells just continue to grow and divide out of control and don't die when they're supposed to. Cancer cells usually group or clump together to form tumors. A growing tumor becomes a lump of cancer cells that can destroy the normal cells around the tumor and damage the body's healthy tissues. This can make someone very sick. Breast cancer is a tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs mostly in women, but men can get it, too. There are different kinds of risk factors of breast cancer. Some factors, like a person's age or race, can't be changed. Others are linked to cancer-causing factors in the environment. Still others are related personal behaviors, such as smoking, drinking, and diet. Some factors influence risk more than others, and your risk for breast cancer can change over time, due to factors such as aging or lifestyle. A doctor may tell a woman to have a mammogram if she has a lump, or pain, in her breast. The mammogram can
