Are we all zombies to society? We go through the same motions every day we all wake up at six in the morning and go to work until five in the afternoon. People are zombies to society and don’t realize they are zombies until they are able to separate themselves from society and enter isolation like the woods or pure nature. People are able to reach enlightenment in nature and realize what is right for them and how they can change their part in society and make a difference. People are able to separate themselves from society where they are zombies and be able to reach enlightenment. Thoreau once said, "The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies....In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgment or of the moral sense." (Thoreau). Man serves his/her society but as machines, as a zombie with no thought of his/her own. We have come to believe that speaking out in society is bad because we are programed at a young age to do what others tell us to do without question. When we were young our parents told us to do chores such as clean our room or take out the trash and at a young age we would question our parents asking them “why do we have to” or “why can’t others do it.” Parents then programed us by saying, “because I told you to” or “because it is your job even if you did not ask for it.” We are then programed to not ask questions because then we will have more work pilled on or because then the unity of a group will not function correctly. If people are to do what they are told and not ask questions about what they are doing then “Why has every man a conscience, then?” (Thoreau). “In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgment or of the moral sense” (Thoreau). If man is not to ask questions about what they are doing why do they do what they are told to do? Is it because we would then be fired or punished if we ask to many question. Than why are we given the
