A and P Lab
Renal System Physiology Exercise 9 page. 121
SC 245 L
Date: 12/18/2011
Point Break down: 100 points
Questions: 60 points
Data/Results: 15 points
Summarizing activities: 25 points
Introduction: In this lab we will learn how the kidney processes blood and produces urine.
Activity 1: Investigating the Effect of Flow Tube Radius on Glomerular filtration.
Data/Results: Questions: Please answer the questions in complete sentences and explain your answers.
1. What effect does increasing the afferent radius have on glomerular filtration rate and pressure? Both the rate and the pressure increase as you increase the afferent radius.
2. What effect will decreasing the efferent radius have on glomerular filtration rate? When I decreased the efferent radius, it increased the filtration rate. Please see table below:
Summary:
In this Activity, I learned/observed that: the nephron has three important jobs on filtering the blood. Glomerular Filtration speed can be affected by the efferent radius and by the afferent radius. Which makes since, because it is like saying the size of the pathway for the blood will make a difference on how fast it is filtered.
Activity 2: Studying the Effect of Pressure on Glomerular Filtration
Data/Results: Please submit a chart or type your data.
Questions: Please answer the questions in complete sentences and explain your answers.
1. What effect does increasing the beak pressure have on glomerular filtration rate and pressure? When you increase the beak pressure, the glomerular filtration rate and the pressure are both increased.
2. In the absence of any regulatory mechanisms, what effect do you think an increase in blood pressure would have on glomerular filtration rate? If there is an increase in blood pressure, I would assume there would be an increase in the glomerular filtration rate, therefore causing an increase in the amount of urine.
Summary:
In this Activity, I learned/observed that: I learned the

In adults the GFR should be somewhere between 100 and 130, while in children it should be about 110 (1). Since the GFR is a measure of the kidney 's function it is used to help classify kidney disease. If GFR is too high or too low this would cause problems because 99% of formative urine needs to be reabsorbed. If GFR is too high, needed substances cannot be reabsorbed quickly enough and they would be lost in the urine. If GFR is too low, everything is reabsorbed, including wastes that are normally disposed of. The collecting duct is the key to determining the volume of filtrate that is released and how concentrated the urine…

What will happen to the urine volume and concentration as the solute gradient (concentration) in the interstitial space is increased? Explain!!! (3 points)  It increases because ADH causes water to move out of urine and the more solute there is the more concentrated the urine. 16. Speculate on ways that desert rats are able to concentrate their urine significantly more than humans? (Think: Hormones) (2 points)  They probably produce more ADH to get all the water possible from the urine as there is not a lot of water in the desert. 17. What would be a reasonable mechanism for diuretics? (2 points)  They act by diminishing sodium reabsorption at different sites in the nephron, thereby increasing urinary sodium and water loss. 18. What will happen to the glucose concentration in the urinary bladder as glucose carriers are added to the proximal tubule? Explain!!! (2 points)  Glucose concentration in the urine decreased because the carriers were able to get the glucose across. 19. Predict what will happen to the urine volume (compared to normal) when aldosterone is added to the distal tubule. Explain!!! (2 points)…

Flow tube radius change has a direct effect on flow rate. As evidenced in this lab, when flow tube radius was increased, the flow rate was also increased. They are directly proportional. As evidenced from the text, when flow tube radius increases in a blood vessel, the flow rate is much more free flowing and flows a lot quicker as the radius is increased. When starting with 1.5mm of radius, the flow was very slow, yet when increased to 2mm, 3mm, and eventually to 5mm, the flow within the blood vessel incrementally increased.…

My prediction was wrong because I thought that the increasing the pressure would increase both the filtration rate and the concentration when really only the filtration rate increased.…
