A Brother's Murder: Effect of Personal Stories on Readers
A Brothers Murder
Victor Hugo wisely said “Son, brother, father, lover, friend. There is room in the heart for all the affections, as there is room in heaven for all the stars.” (BrainyQuote). I believe there is no better quote to match the meaning of this story. After reading this story, I could not believe how much I related to this in my personal life. A Brothers Murder talks about waking up to a phone call, and finding out your brother has been killed. It takes you back through the memory of how it came about. This really hit home for me and sparked the memory of the night I experienced the same thing (talk about your story about your brother). It is crazy to think that by reading one short story, you could be reading about your own experience. The relation to the story and I is unbelievable.
It is truly amazing to see that a story like this can be written. When you experience such a deep and emotional tragedy and still be able to tell the story takes a lot of strength. Writing this paper and having to go back through the memory of my own brothers death is hard for me. I’m not the one to talk about things like this situation let alone publish a short story. I believe that having the privilege to read a short story like A Brothers Murder is definitely a good one; not just for myself but other people as well. This story opens you up to real life experiences that some people think this could never happen to me. Being able to relate to this story on such a high level makes me want to tell others my experience. I want to be able to educate them on the dangers of the streets and that experiences like this are real.
Brent Staples said in his story “I saw that Blake's romance with the street life”. When you pick up a new lifestyle it becomes addicting. You get so used to the thrill that it seems like you there is just no other way to live. You develop a “romance” with it like Brent Staples said his brother did. When this romance develops everything you used to

Brother is accountable for Doodle’s death since he was warned by the doctors not to push him, but he disregarded it and tried to make him like a “normal” boy. As Brother thinks back to him and Doodle walking home from Old Woman’s Swamp, he confessed, “The faster I walked the faster he walked, so I began to run” (Hurst 394). Brothers walking pace displays how he walked faster, just to make Doodle walk faster. Since Brother did this he pushed Doodle too far, putting his life in danger. Brother teaches Doodle how to swim and row, he made Doodle “swim until he turned blue and row until he couldn’t lift an oar” (Hurst 391). Brother wants Doodle to learn faster, so he makes him practice heavily. If Doodle hadn’t of had the heart disabilities that…

The overall theme of this story captures the family with their inner conflicts that occur; it shows a toxic family slowly deforming and breaking apart, which is evident throughout the story as it is a person vs. person scenario. Overall, Brother Dear is a sad short story, and it is believed that the story is mainly about the loss of a loved one or the effect of being a bystander. This story is relatable in addition to resonating with people of all ages and tackling the deeper parts of human emotions, but it wasn’t to my liking, as sad stories tend to have heavy emotions, which are sometimes hard to comprehend. During the work periods, I mainly worked on the slideshow while assigning roles to my group…

Imagine you're a 15 year old boy. You have been out all day, with your friends, or something that would make a great dinner time story for your family. You then come home to find you mother, father tied to chairs, and murdered. Afterwards you walk into another room to see your little sister and little brother, brutally murdered. Sounds like everyone's worst nightmare, but in this case it is one boys reality. Charlie Otero was in 10th grade when he discovered his family in his own home had been strangled to death. I do think the narrator is a dynamic character because in the beginning and throughout most of the story. “Brother” was only helping Doodle because he didn’t want to be embarrassed at school, and didn’t really want to help him. He also felt some negativity towards Doodle because he has to bring him everywhere he goes. With his disability the narrator thinks he will be made fun of at school. But at the end of the story when the narrator finds Doodle dead in the storm he realizes that he actually loves his brother and they became really close to each other.…

Who loved to hear folktale stories from their grandmother at nights before going to sleep? Personally I loved hearing them especially at night with hot chocolate and pan dulce [sweet bread]. However, wouldn’t you wonder why your grandmother would tell you these stories if there was a significant explanation, or lesson to be learned from them? In the book, “Brother I’m Dying”, by Edwidge Danticat it’s dispersed with numerous folk tales and children stories with a symbolic message. Most of the tales were told by her [Edwidge] grandmother “Grandme Melina” who can be seen to be giving her guidance even after her death, through her stories. The tales connect to Danticat providing a form of escape for her during the most troubling times in her life, dealing with issues such as death, displacement and illness.…

The oldest brother in the family has strong values but can't understand how his brother could get himself into so much trouble like this. He explains in the story that he and his family were trying so hard to be a model middle-class family in the Harlem 1950's. The brother, Sonny, had just returned from the military and didn't seem to be much of a hero, more of a rebel, kind of like he stuck out to the family. He starts to get into things that his family would never imagine him doing, drugs and trouble.…

Everyone is dead. It happened in a moment, one small minute has altered my life. I always told myself life isn't fair, it never has been, but this once I ask for a warning or a sign that I would be spending my last day with my family. Everything was fine for a week after the move here, just like the calm before the storm. Now thanks to one drunk driver I'm left on a hospital bed while the nurses play cards. Talk about sympathy. That monster killed Simon. He was just an innocent kid that dreamed of being a scientist, but that dream will die along with many others. My parents, dead, the two people in the world who have loved me with all their heart for 15 long years are dead in seconds. The drunk could have hit any other car destroyed any…

I realized that a lot of families and individuals have experienced even more and unfortunate deaths toward family members, friends, and just loved ones in general. For me writing this essay put me in that same emotional state of mind that I had experienced when both my grandmother and babysitter had passed. That is why today I hold a strong and loving relationship with my family and friends, because when the time comes God is calling one of them home, and that you know, they know, and God knows that you both had a fun ride without any…
