Gary Younge Article Analysis
The article Why the Gun Control Movement Fails, is written by Gary Younge. Gary Younge is a columnist for The Nation. In October 2016, Younge wrote this article about gun control and various shootings on November 23. Younge spoke with parents who lost their children due to gun violence, an organization leader, a member of the NRA, and a gun control activist to get his point across. Gun violence is an incredible problem in the United States and the issue is overwhelmingly concerning. This article informs readers about gun violence and whether the Second Amendment should be changed or repealed. Younge begins his article with a heart wrenching story of a nineteen year old boy, Kenneth, who was killed during a shooting on November 23. The author …show more content…
He is also a columnist for a magazine called The Nation. The Nation can be a credible source, but it depends on the article published in the magazine. Why the Gun Control Movement Fails is not credible because it is an opinion-based article. Younge states his opinion about gun control various times in the article. One of these instances was that he believes guns do not make us safe. This statement can be argued because an individual can declare that owning a gun makes them feel safer or can protect them in a dangerous situation. This article is written for a general audience, informing any person about gun control movements and gun violence. The article goes in depth about deaths on November 23 and about different people’s thoughts and opinions about guns and gun control. Why the Gun Control Movement Fails taught various viewpoints on gun control and it opened my eyes to the fact that people think there is no chance of adjusting the Second Amendment. It also taught me that parents live in fear every day of the possibility that their child could be killed from a gun. On the other hand, I wish this article informed me more about the opinions of advocates for the Second Amendment, so the article would not be

Gun Control Gun control has been a major issue in the past few years, and many journalists have written columns and essays in newspapers that are expressing their opinions on the subject. Nicholas Kristof, whom has been writing for newspapers for over ten years, took it upon himself to write Our Blind Spot about Guns for the New York Times in 2014. In his essay, Nicholas argued that if we set laws and regulations on guns the same way that we have done to cars, the amount of deaths caused by guns would decrease dramatically. He uses various statistics and discusses multiple ways that regulations and laws have decreased the amount of deaths caused by cars, and he relates it back to guns in his very well written essay. Nicholas seems to be addressing politicians in his essay, but his overall audience are those who are reading the newspaper.…

In the article there were discussions on gun control that I really just did not agree on for example, I do feel that gun control does stop some crimes but that it is so easy for an individual to obtain a weapon to that it really just not feel as if the world is a safer place to live in now that everyone is caring a weapon. I felt safer when only law officials were caring the weapons. I have always understood that people want to have the right to protect their families but I feel that it has gotten way beyond that. Protecting our families is not an issue the issue is weapons and the amount of weapons available and more and more guns are being not only sold but there are exchanging hands everyday, and this is a problem in where everyone thinks that gun-control laws are needed. With that being said I still do not agree…

Buzzwords, the current popular culture in news media, have a following comparable to that of a hot celebrity. The topics that the buzzwords are created to illuminate, are often times very serious matters. Unfortunately, if the bandwagon that follows the current debate surrounding a controversial news item is populated by journalists that are nothing more than pomp and circumstance, the hard news issues may not get the attention that is needed to effect change. One such journalist, Nick Gillespie, starts the article with derision and ridicule of both politicians and journalists that are proponents of new gun control laws calling them misguided. It is clear that his intent is to discredit the supporters of gun control as hysterical and illogical. He 's trying to maneuver the reader, who may have a bias through TV or other media, and going off emotional reaction as well, to see the politicos as manic and reactionary.…

In response to an article titled (Gun Debate: Where Is the Middle Ground?) written by Mallory Simon, writer and senior producer of online presentations for the Cable News Network (CNN) on January 31, 2013, the argument can be presented that “Guns don’t kill people, people do.” The article highlighted the common topic of gun control. In that phrase alone it is proposed that somehow guns have a mind of their own and can somehow control themselves. The author presents the proposal that somehow there may be a common ground in maintaining the use and sanction of guns in our country by creating a medium of strict public policy in the form of background checks and security. It is with strong supported evidence that an attempt will be made to argue that the power to control the illegal, malicious and careless use of guns is to limit the power of people to obtain them with a…

He utilized the French terrorist attack as a way to scare the readers and again put them in rage over this topic. I also noticed that he strategically placed this at the end of his article to leave the readers with panic and fear. Even though there isn't a high probability of getting killed in a terrorist attack, in the United States. The author also uses rationalizing as a tactic to make people feel as though everything is ok. He said that there is no weapon that could stop the killing in Colorado and San Bernardino. By the author stating this it allow the reader to feel like it was unpreventable thus changing their views about gun control. Red Herring was also used in the middle of the article in relation to how long to lock up criminals. Last but not least line drawing was used to state that gun control doesn't work and civilians should keep their guns. In conclusion, the author article doesn't support his claim. After carefully analyzing the article the author diverted the topic and just criticized the government for their actions. Thus making the article irrelevant to his claim. He focused more on the topic of mass shooting are unpreventable rather than why gun control shouldn't be implemented. The author is clearly abusing his power of involvement in the media to persuade people to agree with…

Michael Schered wrote an article for Time magazine about more gun control called “The Next Gun Fight.” In his article, he explains how the government is working hard to reduce gun violence. He tends to agree with President Barack Obama by expressing that America does in fact need more gun control. Schered explains how this new gun fight has been more effective and quotes Vise President Joe Biden (after he just had a meeting over gun violence) by stating that, “Millionaires and billionaires were stepping forward. Gun-victim groups were organizing. Social-networking campaigns were being prepared. Celebrities had been recruited to carry the message.” Michael Schered summarizes his overall point with, “It will be…

    Essay On Gun Control

Gun control is a controversial and divisive issue in our routine life, not only in the United States, but also all over the world. Basically, gun control refers to governmental efforts to limit or restrict the production, sale, possession and use of guns by private citizens. Some people believe that it is necessary that federal and state laws allow citizens to purchase and possess guns, or even actively require adult citizens to maintain weapons in their house, and periodically to train in their use. However, others think gun control is indispensable in our society because gunshots are the main cause of death in the United States. As for me, I prefer to support the second view because guns are lethal and the fewer people that have them the better. The only function of a gun is to kill. The more instruments of death are removed from our society, the safer we will be. With my research, I found a lot of striking data about guns menacing people’s lives. There should be gun control in the United States because guns are a menace to people’s lives.…
