First, the appellation to females shows that they are in subordination to males. “Mrs. Hutchinson came hurriedly along the path to the square” (Jackson, 2), “she said to Mrs. Delacroix” (Jackson, 2), “Mrs. Dunbar said regretfully” (Jackson, 3). Here “Mrs. Delacroix”, “Mrs. Hutchinson” and “Mrs. Dunbar” all suggest that one female cannot be an individual being after her marriage, since she has to be a part of her husband by calling her “Mrs”. When Tessie comes lately, the villager’s addresses that “Here comes your Missus, Hutchinson” (Jackson, 2) instead of calling her own name also shows that she has become a subordinate object for her husband. Just like Lakoff says in his book Language and Woman 's Place, “It is with Mrs, Miss, and Mr. Since a significant part of the opinion one normally forms about a woman 's character and social station depends on her marital status - as is not the case with men” (Lakoff, 73). This phenomenon is common all over the world. Why don’t males change their appellations like female do? Actually, the marriage cannot change anything but the couple’s new relationship and family lifestyle. So does a female have to compromise to become her husband’s stooge? Perhaps only when she makes accomplishment can she be introduced as an independent individual. Those who are satisfied with their status quo are likely to accept the new subsidiary address. Thus, females’ subordinated appellations gradually become accustomed.…

Some view the Crusades as wars of bloodlust, greed, and power. War is an escalated conflict of interest usually over money and/or resources. The outcome of war is that one culture advances due to newly acquired resources or advancements made from the war. The Crusades, in principle, were originated to assist Constantinople from the onslaught of Seljuk Turks and free the Holy City of Jerusalem from the clutches of Muslim control. These events would create the most dramatic geopolitical upheaval until the discovery of the New World. From the crusades technology has advanced economically, socially, and politically in many ways.…

As the dominant philosophical school for around two thousand years in Chinese imperial history, Confucianism is always regarded as the most representative ideology of China, associated with numerous books, poems, artworks and stories that glorify Confucianism’s permeation into every corner of Chinese society. However, before Han Wudi, Confucianism was only one of those competing philosophical schools founded in Spring and Autumn period. During the Warring States period and Qin dynasty, Legalism took place of all other philosophical schools and helped King Zheng, the First Emperor, to unify China for the first time. Why Confucianism defeated Legalism as well as other philosophical schools in Han dynasty and thrived thereafter is a very interesting and important topic in Chinese history. This essay focuses on the transition from Legalism to Confucianism and elaborates the adaptation of Confucianism in the period of Han Wudi.…

I was born in China and spent twelve years there before I came to the United States. In China, I must use honorific language for the people who are older than me, because it expresses respect. I can only use “uncle” and “aunt” for the ones who already are married, and “older brother” and “older sister” for the ones who are single. Overall, China has defined lines between people from different age and class in communication. I religiously followed this communication style throughout my childhood in China. Therefore, when I first entered the U.S., I felt very uncomfortable and rude by calling people’s first names when they are older than me. It took me more than a year to adopt the new communication style. Yet, I continue to use honorific language when I speak Chinese, because it represents Chinese culture. American culture is different. In a way, English does not specify titles for elders, and thus not drawing a line between people at different age. I realize simply by calling people’s first name, instead of honorific names, will bring people closer. They can talk to each other like peers, and communicate without pressure. For instance, I felt pressure talking to teachers when I was in China. It is important to show respect by using honorific language to them. When I was in a high school in the U.S., I enjoyed talking to my teachers and felt they were my mentors and friends. We exchanged opinions and life stories, and we communicated back and forth. As of today, I alter my communication style and it does not reflect my Chinese culture when I speak…

    I. With Book I, the text introduces two of the basic themes of the work: what qualities are desirable in a human being and how morality can be reflected in one's behavior. Different translations offer various interpretations of some of the language from the texts, but "virtue" is a recurring quality that is revisited many times. Some translations may introduce the term chun-tzu or junzi, translating as "prince" or "gentleman" respectively. In either case, the terms refer to a person of superior moral character, not necessarily a person of nobility. Some translations present this word as "scholar".…
