I have not always been afraid of my mistress leaving me. In the beginning, I was surrounded by warm light, illuminated on a great pedestal above everyone else. This made me feel mistreated, even though my sisters told me that it was good that I was on the pedestal. I lived there day and night. My dreams at night brought me to a wonderful breast that was just the right size to make my gloriness match hers. I never knew whose breast I sat upon, but from then on I knew what breast to look for. Life continued for me sad and lonely, until suddenly I was picked up one day. All I could hear was the muffled sounds of two men talking, and the rustling of a paper bag. Before I knew what was happening, I was in a black velvet box. I immediately started to panic.
That night I was shown to the prettiest woman in the world. She reached in the box and began to lift me up. Her skin was so soft and warm. I knew then that this was the one. This would be the person who would love and cherish me forever. As she lifted me all the way off the velvet, she unfastened the lock and had begun to put me around her neck. I closed my eyes scared what would come. All of a sudden there was silence. I opened my eyes to see myself draped around the breast in my dreams. I had never felt so complete, or been so happy in my life.
My mistress wore me everywhere. I felt superior to all of my sisters, especially the ones that envied the relationship of the mistress and I. My sisters constantly talked of how fake I was, and that I needed to go back to the store in which I came from. I could not help the fact they were jealous of my looks, and the relationship I had with the mistress. Life was magnificent for me, and I could not ask for anything better. That was until the mistresses husband brought her another gift.
From this moment forward I was scared that the relationship between the mistress and I would change. That the mistress would come to love her new gift more than me. That she would get tired of the way I looked, and shun me to the black velvet box that I arrived in. Over the next year, my mistress began to love her new gift more and more. Soon, I was left astray. unloved, and lonely. I have never been so cold in my entire life. After a year of sitting aloft my mistresses breast, I was shoved back into the black velvet box I hated the most.
My life had changed drastically since the year my mistress received me. I was once her most prized possession, but now I sit in the darkness of the black velvet box, The life I was most scared of living has come to be my lifestyle. One late night, I heard my mistress crying. She was talking about how her husband had cheated and left her alone. I felt sorry for my mistress, but I also was happy that she felt the pain that she made me feel. As I listened to her, she began to speak of all the priceless things he had given her. That is when I heard the rustling of my mistress searching for something. Soon my mistress stopped searching, and that is when I felt the black velvet box move.
The next thing I knew was that there was a bright light, and the shadow of my mistress. She looked down at me, and lifted me off the black velvet. She inspected me closely with her gentle warm hands. I have never seen my mistress look at me the way she looked at me that night. She treated me like a child. Picking me up and holding me close to her breast. The warmth of her breast was once again against me. I felt complete. My mistress took me off her breast, and looked at me. What my mistress said next shocked me. My mistress lifted me up and said, “You have always been my favorite piece of jewelry. I will forever cherish you, because diamonds really are a girls best friend.”

Love is sacred. The goosebumps painted on the skin are worthless without it. “Last Night”, written by Sharon Olds, is a perfect reflection of how being in love has a profound effect when in relation to intimacy. Olds compares her experience while being in love, to her experience when her feelings for her partner are neutral. Throughout this piece Olds conveys her message with the use of similes, repetition, imagery, and hyperbole.…

I sat in my room for a long while weeping before I heard a familiar noise outside. I rushed to the door peering out just before I saw that same angry girl jumping into my flower bed destroying my flowers. I couldn't even find it in me to yell at her stood there in astonishment and a wave of sadness washed over me. It was almost as if my whole life was taken away from me from this careless little girl who was only thinking of herself. I wanted to scream I but I just couldnt. I felt tears forming in my eyes, I forgot the girl was there before I heard her scarce and quivered voice, “M-miss Lottie!” she had said before she hurried to her feet. Her eyes were swollen as she looked up into my sad and weary eyes. I stood there for a moment before I turned away and went inside to my room. I thought to myself, this is a dream I will wake up in a little bit and my flowers will be there when I wake up, but in the back of my mind I knew they were…

Sure we had our ups and downs but in the end we loved each other and that was all that mattered. There was nothing standing in the way of us. Well, maybe one thing… or should I say person… Fortunato. You see, Fortunato was a rich man, richer than I’d ever be. His family pretty much owned the town and everything in it. He would always confront my girlfriend telling her about how happy he could make her and the wonderful life they could have together. I knew that this was true. Whenever I would ask pearl about him she would tell me not to worry and explained how she would never love him. These words would relieve me for short periods until the next time I heard of him addressing her. Fortunato was also a very persistent man and was not used to being told no to having things he wanted. Once he caused a ruckus so big I thought a war might break out. I walked out of the car, and looked up to see the same large window. I stuck my hand in my pocket, to feel the same switchblade knife I had been holding onto for years. I took a deep breath and started climbing up the wall towards the window. The window was closed, but not locked, and I stepped into the cold room. There she was, in the same rose quartz room. She slept peacefully in the same baby pink, puffy bed, so comfortable compared to the hard, pavement floors I’ve slept on for the past 15 years. I stood at the edge of her bed, watching her breathe heavily while dreaming of something pleasant. How ironic.I tightened my grip on the knife. My palms sweaty, but my eyes focused. I raised my arm, the knife firm in my hand, and swiftly stabbed…

A beautiful woman slowly emerged from the room with her arms raised in the air as if she was embracing her moment and time to shine while the crowd roared with a deafening sound. With a twirl she acknowledged her audience and a bow that seemed as though she thought the audience was begging for an encore, finally, she turned her attention to the man that undoubtedly matched her own beauty. As she locked eyes on her soon to be husband she started walking slowly at first toward him and quicker as she got closer, eventually running to him in a dramatic fashion as if her lover had returned from war. Now pushed up against his unwilling body, she snapped her neck back with enthusiasm making sure that every last hair would not interfere with her big finale, a kiss from the equally handsome…

I woke up in the hospital, the room was stuffy and the air had a undertone of bleach. Beautiful framed pieces of art hang the wall. There were vases of flowers in the room. I look around, every surface was dustless. The nurses were unhurried, they moved with a serene peacefulness from room to room on their rounds. Above the double doors were large blue plastic signs with the area of the hospital that lie ahead. I got this overwhelming feeling of wanting to cry. Brick by brick my walls were tumbling down. The feeling punched through my empty stomach ripping through my bones, guts, and muscles. I knew Ms. Anna would be upset.…

She asked me what my name was and I replied,” Roger”. Then she told me to go wash my face. She left the door right open I thought I could make a run for it, but I didn’t want to put myself in any more danger. The lady got up and left the room only looking at her purse. She said her name was Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. I was amazed by how long her name was but I had no time to think about that. I took care to sit on the other side of the room so she wouldn’t suspect anything. Then she heated some lima beans and ham she had in her icebox. I had to admit I was starving. She also made some cocoa. As we ate dinner she said,” Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoe.” Then she led me down the hall and I didn’t know what to say. As I walked out the door she told me goodnight and to be safe, but I didn’t say anything back. No words can explain how grateful I am for her to do the things for me. Then she shut the door. I was relieved when I got home. Man… What a…

I was born a slave in Norfolk, Virginia, but never realized I was until about eight years of my childhood had passed. I was deprived of information about myself and had no recollection of who my parents were or what my actual age was. My best estimation is that I am about twenty-seven years old. My master, David M’Alister, called me by the name of Rachael. I have lived on his plantation for as long as I could remember, and have been known as his favorite house servant. One afternoon, I was sent out on an errand to fetch bread for the mistress. I ran into the most handsome man named Robert; he lived just about 8 miles away from my plantation, and better yet, was a free man. Over the course of time, we became great acquaintances and he offered to buy my freedom and start a family. I went straight to tell my mistress and she near threatened to kill me. She believed that slaves had no…

The door shut with a bang. I looked outside my blurred window, and watched the droplets of rain, dance through the sky and on to the ground. I glanced at my phone it was 11:00 pm. I looked out my window again, and I saw it. What we drove 12 hours for. Our new house, for a while. I climbed out of the moving truck, and started helping my parents and siblings unload the truck. It took us 4 hours to get everything out. It was night, and the house was empty, it looked like no soul had lurked here for a while. Since we got here so late there was no beds. So we had to sleep on the cold hardwood floor with pillows and blankets. Sounds like the perfect day ever right, moving away from somewhere you have lived since kindergarten, to half way across the country. Having to ride in a car for 12 hours then unload a moving truck for 4 hours. Then having to sleep on the hardwood floor. The most perfect day. You’re probably wondering how I got myself here, I’ll tell you.…
