Do you think when the end of a story is changed; do the main purpose/message of the story takes on a new meaning? Ernest Hemingway wrote the short story that is called “Cat in the Rain” in 1920s. There are especially two main characters that are George and his wife who has no name in this story. Also, there are other two characters that are called as the Hotelkeeper and the Maid, and a cat, which symbolized the main purpose of the story. Before the analyzing of the Cat in the Rain, I would like to summarize it shortly. According to story, when we look at the two main characters George and his wife, it can be seen that how they have a relationship. We see George’s wife as unhappy and George as a character that does not care so much about his wife. Too much she wants the cat, which stays under the table so that it does not get wet. In the end of the story, she gets the cat and this case makes her happy. Thinking about the end of the story: The cat the maid brings up can be the one the George’s wife wanted and the implications of both scenarios that one is what Hemingway wrote and the other is if the maid brings up a different cat.
As we can see, the woman who is George’s wife wants to have the cat that stays under the table in whole story. She wants this cat because it seems so helpless while it trying to keep dry under the table by running the rain. Here is one of the woman’s words about it: “ The poor kitty out trying to keep dry under a table. ” After that, she went to outside to take it but she did not find. Also, it can be understood that how she wants this cat too much with the word: “I wanted it so much, I do not know why I wanted it so much. I wanted that poor kitty.
