A Matter of Priorities Case Analysis
Background
Sheila Stephens, production manager at Thompson Manufacturing, interviews potential candidates for open positions at their firm. After conducting the interviews, she has the final authority to make the appropriate selection. The human resource manager, Pete Peterson, does the initial screening before sending them to Sheila. Pete brought in Allen Guthrie, for an interview, at a time when Sheila was extremely busy and unprepared. Many interruptions took place until Allen’s prior commitments required him to leave.
Issues Addressed Applicants, like Allen, can opt out of the selection process at any time. After seeing a poorly planned interview and lack of effective communication Allen may choose to walk away from this job opening. Some general issues with this interview make Thompson Manufacturing out to be a firm with low standards, lack of experience, and low overall quality. Depending on Allen’s personal evaluation of the interview process, Thompson’s could potentially face legal issues for not giving equal opportunities to qualified candidates.
Answering the Questions
To avoid interviews like this one, Sheila could have done a few things differently. Different companies divide up the selection responsibilities in one of two ways: hiring by individual department or HR does initial screening while the department managers make the final selection. According to this incident, Thompson Manufacturing uses the second option. I believe the most effective changes that could have taken place should have come from Pete. It is important to make sure candidates even meet minimum job requirements. When Allen applied for the job and Pete should have conducted the initial screening interview, administered appropriate testing, obtained background and reference
