A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
A Day I Lost My Friend But Found My Purpose

English 121
Sara Hinton
August 5, 2013

In life, there are so many unforgettable moments that change your way of thinking and affect the way you live your life from that moment. Life is so precious and too often we take it for granted. As I discuss this day in detail, you will see how on August 4, 2012 my life changed. The day started off perfect because flight operations ended earlier the night before and the on deck time for my crew and I was later than normal. The day was special because one of my sailors, my adoptive brother, decided that he would give the Navy another three years. We mustered at 0900 on the flight deck and prepared for the reenlistment ceremony. As Airman took his oath for reenlistment I felt as that of a proud mentor. In his speech he thank me for helping him change his life and convincing him that the Navy was still his best option moving forward. Next was time for the Navy’s best reenlistment meal, pizza and hot wings, with ice cream and cake. After lunch and clean-up, it was just about time to get our day started with work. All of Air Department gathered on the bow to conduct FOD (Foreign Object Damage) walk down. The day was so beautiful. The weather was not too hot or too cold. We finished with FOD walk down and I went into Flight Deck Control for our daily flight plan brief. From there it was getting with my crew and briefing them on today’s schedule. After all safety checks were complete, the Air Boss came across the 3MC saying “On the Flight Deck, LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE. My blood started pumping as we launched on aircraft after another one. As the F-35 landed on the deck for the first time, the Air Boss said congratulations you guys just made history. It was the first time this aircraft has ever landed on any type of naval vessel. This historic moment had the crew pumped and flight operations were going smoothly. As we transitioned

It is those sentimental, heart wrenching, crucial, or maybe life threating moments that change a person for the good or for the worse. This essay challenges those pivotal moments of another person’s story.…

One day in English, we were asked to talk about a life changing incident in our lives. I have had this assignment before but I was to sad to talk about such a subject. We go around the circle. It was toward mid-senior year in high school. Maybe February. I was anticipating which colleges would accept someone like me, and trying to enjoy as much time with friends as I could. I was with my best friends, appreciating a beautiful Southern California day, and had come to realize my last days as a senior were coming to a close. I was a perfect day; big white clouds covered the skies, along with the beaming sun hitting the earth. The oceans breeze in our faces, and our shades on. High-wasted shorts and crop tops were the main clothing we’d wear, and if it were cold we’d just layer a sweater over it. We were living the “Cali lifestyle” because I live in an area where most of the students at my high school were half Caucasian and half Asian. I live in an area where the beach is only ten minutes away. Seeing dolphins or whales from the cliffs is a regular sight to see. Going to big bear during the winter is normal, and so are trips to Hawaii. Fortunately I had the opportunity to meet the greatest friends and best friends I will ever have in my life. But there is a lot you still don’t know.…

Middle age is the point in our lives when we reflect and take stock of where we are in life and where we are going. I began to reflect on my life and to question the choices I made. I thought of the paths I took and wondered if I could make a change at this stage of my life. Having reached middle-age, I had become complacent and accepting of the outcome of my life choices. However, I would still beat myself up with the “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda.”…

Our past experiences are what make us the person we are today. We are all from different backgrounds, cultures, religions, traditions and therefore we all have different personalities, thoughts, and opinions on certain issues. It’s what leads us to how we react in certain situations and what we want to do in our futures: what we are passionate about. All these things stem from where we came from. Being from a different culture and coming from a different country in my own case has been a huge part of who I am today. Having had the opportunity to come to the USA I’ve been able to experience so many things that I would have never gotten the chance to do if I would have stayed in Sierra Leone. This makes me wonder, how different my life would have been. Think about how your life was when you were ten years old. For the majority of kids, the most important thing they had to worry about was if they did all their homework that night or if they would start in a basketball or soccer game. For me, in Sierra Leone in the late 90’s, it was whether I could survive another hour of the atrocities that were taking place right in front of my own eyes. Each day I wondered if my family and I could escape the clench of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), which at that time was under the control of former army corporal Foday Sankoh. The war was fueled by blood diamonds that the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) mined using slave labor.…

teachers, and townsfolk. But so does everyone else he knows. Landon does not see this as a flaw, per se, but as a trait shared by all teenagers. He is aware of his own unkindness, but he sees it as harmless; in fact, he realizes that he could be so much more cruel, and he prides himself on not crossing an imaginary line he has set for himself. "Gossip is one thing," Landon says, "hurtful gossip is completely another, and even in high school we weren't that mean." What Jamie forces Landon to see, however, is two-fold: First, that those people Landon is gossiping about or mocking are probably aware of his sentiments and are hurt by it. Second, that gossiping and mocking are not required activities for teenagers; after all, Jamie is a teenager who does not participate in these activities.…

I'm sure many of you know what the majority of Nicholas Sparks's books are: tearjerkers which aim to make the reader fall in love with the novel, only to cry at the end. A Walk to Remember was the first Nicholas Sparks book I had ever read, and it was just about perfect.…
