This essay will assess the usefulness of personalised inductions in hpnotherapy sessions. As well as taking a look at when a personalised screed is not needed and the many ways there are to assess which style of screed will be most affective. The main body of this essay will focus on the evidence both for and agisnt a personlised screed and attempt to provide a conhertent argument with which the reader can make up their own mind.
A hypnotic intuction is the tool used by hypnotherypists in order to aid their clients in achieveing a trance state, it is known that this is harder for some clients to achieve then others, it is generaly accepted that some clients find it almost impossible to reach a trance state through hypnosis (Boys and Karle 2010), the majority of clients are however able to achieve light trance states and deeper. The simple fact that some clients find it easier to achieve hypnosis then other highlights the potential need for personalised inductions, every body is different, we all have different likes and dislikes, personalities and indeed life experiences that make us more responsive to different ques.
When in a session with a client the words we use to produce a trance state are vary importent, more so then in a regular conversation, this is due to the fact that the client generally has their eyes closed and is therefore cut off from a great deal of the everyday comunication ques that aid in understanding each other. Body language is considered to make up 55% of human comunication with tone and volume making up 38% and words come in last making up just 7% of comunication. With words making up such a small percentage of how we comunicate with each other, the need for a personalised induction could be seen as vital, a way of taloring the words used so they have more meaning to the client and therefore

    Induction is a type of tool to assist an individual to use the ability that each and everyone of us possesses such as to enable us to go into a trance. The subconscious mind can continue to hear what is said and for this reason the subconscious can continue being stimulated in the same way by using the senses. A personalised induction is used to help an individual focus his or her awareness on something and to slowly move towards the intended result. Inductions that might work for one person might not necessarily work for another, as no one person is the same. We all have different needs, likes and dislikes, cultures, thoughts and so forth, even though we all seem to appear similar. It is due to all these differences that might make a more personalised induction more successful for an individual. “One of the most fundamental conclusions drawn by Erickson after his years of observation was that every individual is unique” (Havens, 2003, p.23). Some hypnotists use a generic type script compared to other hypnotists that choose to write a personalised script that is specially tailored for the individual person. The type of script that is considered more effective is open for debate. A personalised induction may or may not work effectively as it depends on a variety of factors which will be discussed further on.     What is of equal importance as the words we use when a therapist creates and delivers a script for an induction, is the way in which it is delivered. Hypnotic inductions generally fall into two different styles; ‘Permissive’ and ‘Authoritarian’. A permissive approach is gentle, caring and without command. Typically a person who responds well to this style of induction is in a caring or nurturing profession, is compassionate and will be available to advice and support. Using language such as ‘you may feel’ or ‘you might want’, ensures that they feel supported and maintain choice. An authoritarian approach is firmer, logical and more direct. The authoritarian type of client will likely be in a profession such as the armed forces, the police or in business. This person responds well to direct language and clear commands that cement their faith in the therapist, as these people may well be cynical about hypnotherapy and will respond to the practitioner confidently, confirming their skills. Using ‘you will feel’ or ‘you will be in control’ will be effective. A third alternative approach to consider is the ‘Theatrical’ approach. As the title suggests this uses a more demonstrative process as this client is extrovert, perhaps an actor and responds well to attention and story telling.
