A Piece of Cloth
“I performed at Tiananmen Square in 1989, 15 days before the crackdown. I sang A Piece of Red Cloth (‰∏ÄÂùóÁ∫¢Â∏É), a tune about alienation. I covered my eyes with a red cloth to symbolize my feelings. The students were heroes. They needed me, and I needed them. After Tiananmen, however, authorities banned concerts. We performed instead at “parties,” unofficial shows in hotels and restaurants

A Piece of Red Cloth is one of the most classical songs of Cui Jian‘s. It sounds like a love story but actually it tells the special time of chaos and the belief of the youth

A Piece of Cloth
By Cui Jian

The author Cui Jian wrote this song and performed it at Tiananmen Square in 1989 just a few weeks before the shootings. He was wanting to connect with his student audience and used a piece of red cloth to cover his eyes to symbolize his feelings about how he felt they were all alienated and how it was a time of chaos but yet there was hope in the students and their youth.

He used many different language features to communicate his ideas in the song.

Imagery was the key one used to set himself apart from other singers. With the use of a piece of red cloth he lies it across his eyes and makes you imagine what he sees now that his eyes are covered “I see the happiness”. Happiness could be many different things to many people, and so your imagination is engaged to explore what happiness is to you.

He uses dialogue by asking a question then following it up with an answer. This is done in several versus with each answer provoking further imagination such as “You asked me where I’m headed I said , ‘I’m going your way’”. You imagine where you might be heading if it were you.

He talks about having no where to live and not being able to see the road. In all this chaos and uncertainty there is still a sense of hope as his hand is clasped by the friend giving a sense of security and direction to go. “My hand was clasped by yours”

He is happy for his

Robert Kilker concludes that though Black Robe “may at times pretend to equalize its perspectives of the French and Algonquins . . . it always recovers that balance, replacing it with a Eurocentric hierarchy.” I felt just the opposite. For me, Black Robe was based around Chomina, a true hero. Chomina is a strong character who stands firm in his beliefs but respects the beliefs of others, which is why he is the essence of the movie. As the movie progresses, the characters change, especially Laforgue, who comes to question his very identity as a Christian. Chomina changes the least, however, and emerges as the film’s most powerful character. His key trait is his ability to establish relationships that are founded on respect. Chomina accepts outsiders, while staying true to his own culture. He demonstrates how two cultures can co-exist, but not assimilate into one culture or the other. The basis for this co-existence is respect – a respect that begins in respect for himself and spreads to respect for his tribe and respect for other cultures.…

It has become apparent through the study of ‘Maestro’ by Peter Goldsworthy and Don McLean’s song ‘Starry Night’ that composers use a variety of distinctively visual images to comment on the cultural, historical and emotional values of society. Through the use of various written techniques that convey visual representations, both composers have shaped meaning for their audiences. Goldsworthy and McLean utilise a myriad of language techniques for instance metaphors, repetition, oxymoron’s and juxtaposition which create visual images towards their audience. Goldsworthy’s ‘Maestro’ is a fictional novel about growing up in Australia and seeking to be a performer in music whereas Don McLean’s ‘Starry Night’, is a five verse song dedicated to the life of Vincent Van Gogh, particularly his painting ‘A Starry Night’.…

“Annuka told me they believe that in the forest at night the dead can see. The souls of men hunt the souls of animals,” said Daniel in the 1991 film, Black Robe. Based in the 17th century, Black Robe follows a French Jesuit priest (Father LaForgue) and a fellow companion through Quebec’s wilderness during the peak of the harsh winter months. Their escorts, the Algonquin native tribe, make attempts to lead them to a Christian mission in a Huron village too which Father LaForgue will become head priest and manage the settlement. Along the way, however, the young Priest hurtles multiple obstacles in both his faith, and with the native people. The struggle between what the natives already believe, and what the French, specifically Father LaForgue, are trying to make them understand is the cause to most the conflict, betrayal, and inevitable death in the film.…

Fed up by the oppression that the Chinese government showed its citizens, a man decided he has going to stand up and show everyone else not to be afraid to stand up to the Chinese government. With what looked like a normal day while walking to work, the man, with suitcase in hand, walked across the road and stopped in the middle to block the row of tanks from moving forward to suppress protesters. Eventually he was pulled out of the way but not before making a statement.…
