Doc Severinsen Review They’re loud and hip. They pump up an audience, as they spew with energy. They keep the crowd going all night long. Who are these people? The answer might surprise some, as the group being referred to is the Doc Severinsen Big Band. What’s even more surprising is that the leader of this band, Doc Severinsen himself, is a respectable 86-years-old. Despite his old age, Severinsen managed to deliver a powerhouse show on October 22nd, in Eisenhower Auditorium. Doc Severinsen is the epitome of a great performer, as his undying energy, quirky style, and exceptional musical talent contributed to his spectacular Penn State performance. Picture an 86-year-old man. What comes to mind? With the occasional exception, many men this age are retired, some are grandfathers, and most are living quieter, slower-paced lives. With the exception of having grandchildren, Severinsen fits none of these stereotypes. His energy level throughout the performance was comparable to the energy levels displayed by much younger musicians. He kept both the other musicians in his band and the Penn State crowd pumped up by yelling out and making sure that everyone was having a good time. Although one could tell that Severinsen was getting worn out, at times, from blowing his trumpet for too long (seen as his face turned red and his cheeks got puffy), nothing would stop him from delivering a magnificent, foot-tapping, body-swaying performance. Doc Severinsen has always been known for his outrageous style, and his getup on Tuesday did not disappoint. No, his outfit was not quite at the level of Lady Gaga’s, but for his generation, it would be considered pretty wild. The best word to describe his outfit choice would have to be flashy. Severinsen still presented himself nicely and in a formal matter, but he just stuck out from the rest of the members of his band. Severinsen’s original style was not just seen in the clothing
