ABSTRACT
Social work research and statistics is a part of social work profession. Through the programme, “HEALTH AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS AMONG GANDHIPURAM SLUM RESIDENCE, CHENNAI” was chosen as the topic of study. Survey was done in a specific slum in Chennai. Thorough analysis and data interpretation was done from the survey. The same was documented for future reference since the trainee have plans for conducting a community organization program on health and nutrition among the slum people Based on the results, action plan will be framed.

A. INTRODUCTION Globally nutritional and health status is considered the best indicator of the well-being of young children and a parameter for monitoring progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).In developing countries, 50.6 million children aged less than five years are malnourished. The nutritional status of slum children is worst amongst all urban groups and is even poorer than the rural average. Due to improper nutritional habit the health of the individuals in the slums gets affected indirectly.
B. STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM According to the World Health Organization, malnutrition is the biggest contributor to child mortality, as it directly or indirectly leads to various deficiency disorders. There is clear evidence about the impact of nutrition on health conditions of an individual. Many life threating diseases can occur due to malnutrition. Most of them affected will be children’s. So it is very important to concentrate on a country’s health aspect. And one important fact about developing nation is nearly 35% of the money is spend every year by our government to enhance and full fill the medical requirements of the people.
