Genre: The genre of this short story is Magic Realism, due to its outlandish characters.
Theme: The themes expressed in this story are a contrast between cruelty and compassion. We see how human nature is when encountered with something or someone extraordinary and weird. The people of the story treat the old man as if he were some carnival show, and degrade him. On the other side we can see how all of that subsides when he is no longer ridiculed and finally treated in a more fairer way when Pelayo and his wife gives him shelter and provisions.
Narrator’s Point of View: The story is narrated from a third person point of view.
Setting: The setting of the story is mostly in the courtyard of Pelayo and Elisenda’s property near the ocean.
Conflicts: The main conflict of the story is Man versus Man. The old man is confronted with the people community ridiculing and degrading him like if he was some sort of circus act.
Characters:
The Old Man: Arrives at Pelayo and Elisenda’s property disheveled and covered in mud. He astounds them with his enormous and strange wings. He is considered as an “Angel” and believed to be Norwegian sailor because of his strange dialect.
Pelayo: Is the husband of Elisenda and found the old man lying in his yard. He is considerate for the old man as he protects him from the crowd. He believes that the old man is not an angel but a Norwegian sailor due to his strange dialect.
Elisenda: Is the wife of Pelayo and mother of a sick child. She is somewhat kind yet greedy as she starts benefiting of the old man strange circumstance.
Father Gonzaga: Is the Priest of the community. He is interested by the old man and tries to prove with the church if he really is an angel.
The Child: Is Pelayo’s and Elisenda’s newborn who is very ill until the arrival of the old man. In the story the old man and the child were ill at the same time.
