A Worn Path(1940) is a story that talks about a very old African American woman named Phoenix. This strong old lady goes on a long journey by foot through a forest to bring her grandson the medicine he needs for his damaged throat. In this essay I will be analyzing and discussing the main character and themes which are love, determination and courage.
In my point of view I think the theme of the journey is undying love and determination. As we can see throughout the story Phoenix faces a lot of obstacles during her journey. Old phoenix said " out of my way all you foxes, owls, beetles, jack rabbits and wild animals, which are some difficulties she faced including a thorn bush that caught her dress. That bush seemed to be alive and trying to stop her from going but this strong woman manages to overcome all of them and make her way through by her determination and great love to her grandson.
Also phoenix comes across a man who helps her then points his gun on her saying " doesn’t the gun scare you?" and her reply was " no sir, I seen plenty go off closer by, in my day and for less than what I done" and this shows that she had a hard life growing up and was probably enslaved which made her a strong fearless woman which I admire. This part of the story also presents racism and abuse black people faced during that time. Phoenix finally arrives to get the medicine for her grandson and the nurse says "she doesn’t come for herself, she has a little grandson, she makes these trips just as regular as clockwork" which shows the undying love and dedication this old lady has towards the little boy.
From this story we learn how unconditional love and compassion can be an unstoppable force. Phoenix symbolizes strength, power and courage. And she's a perfect female example of a fighter. The story also represents a part of the African American life back then, where they faced racism and discrimination, and till out present day it continues to be a theme
