Hank Mallone: Hello everybody, and welcome to today’s show. We thought we would start today off by talking to Harry Lumley he is a young local boy and he is here today to talk to us about Macbeth. So how are you today Harry? What will you be talking about?
Harry Lumley: Hello Hank I just like to say thanks for having me on the show. Today I have chosen to talk about lady Macbeth from Shakespeare’s play Macbeth.
HM: Lady Macbeth she sounds important, how come you choose to speak about her?
HL:I believe that she is one of Shakespeare’s fiercest female characters, she speaks her mind and is one of his best villains.
HM: But for those who have not read Macbeth what is it about?
HL: Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s shortest tragedies. It is about a regicide and it effect afterwards. So Macbeth kills Duncan, the king, and then he becomes obsessed with keeping the throne in his family and beating the witches prophecy. Macbeth’s wife lady Macbeth is always tempting Macbeth with ways of getting more power but she eventually gives in and succumbs to her guilt and kills herself.
HM: Her personality, what was it like?
HL: Lady Macbeth is obsessed with the supernatural and having control over the situations she gets put in. She says “I would, while it was smiling in my face, have pluck’d my nipple from his boneless gums and dash’d the brains out, had I so sworn as you have done to this.” (act 1, scene 7, line 56-59) I mean she basically just said she would smash her own baby’s head in if she had sworn to kill Duncan and not go through with it. Her thoughts are very twisted. Lady Macbeth always changes her personality when she is around Macbeth. “Come, you spirits, that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full, of direst cruelty, make thick my blood. Stop the access and passage of remorse, that no compunctions visitings of nature, shake fell my purpose, nor keep peace between, the effect it!
