a day in the life
On Friday April 26, 2013 my Health Care Careers class and I visited Grand View Hospital for the day. Each of us were assigned to a new department to spend the day. I was assigned to the Telemetry B Unit. We went there to job shadow the nurses that work in that department. Our goal was to follow the nurses and observe them giving basic care to their patients.
Upon arriving at Grand View I was excited and could not wait to get to my destination. Finding the Telemetry B unit was confusing because I had to travel all the way through the Telemetry A unit first. When I found my department I was greeted by the Monitor Technician who immediately brought me to her station. On her desk were three computer monitors. On the monitors were EKG’s of every patient in Telemetry A, B, and C. The technician went into detail about many different kinds of heart conditions. I learned what an EKG of Atrial Fibrillation and Ventricular Fibrillation looked like. She also printed me out a few examples of both. The technician showed professionalism when reporting on her patients. She did so by promptly alerting a nearby nurse when a patients heart rate was abnormal. This related to was I have learned in class about immediately reporting if there is a change in a patients condition. My experience at Telemetry B was informational and educational. I felt very good about my time there and would like working as a Monitor Technician in the future.

It has not been quite recently when I scheduled and fulfilled the observation requirement, but about a year ago this month when applying for this program last year. The amazing thing about it is that the memory of this day still remains vividly in my mind. It was on this day that I learned the basic and not so basic job requirements for becoming a radiology technologist. Many might think that this job is limited to aiming a machine, positioning a patient, and taking pictures of their bones, but come to find out there was a whole lot more to it.…

Definitely, my most memorable shadowing experience. Although the 12-hour shift was at night, the ongoings on the Trauma Center keeps everyone on their toes. Nurses, radiologists, surgeons, even policemen all worked together on various cases. The most severe of the night was of a young man whose femur broke in half after being knocked by a vehicle while running away with a stolen bike. Having being present while the orthopedist straightened his leg with only local anesthesia was definitely an impressive moment. My first gunshot wound was seen and I observed a surgery where a large pus-filled abscess had to be cleaned from a diabetic patient. The dreaded fear of burnt flesh was…

It’s amazing how much I’ve learned in the past eight months at Fortis Institute. It’s just so hard to believe that less than two weeks we will be done with my education. I must admit I will miss spending my time here. But most of all I will never forget the experience I received as an Intern Medical Assistant working with Patients.
Making a difference in someone’s life just fascinates me, knowing that I have the power to help someone. Working at North Belt Medical Clinic as a Medical Assistant intern is one of the greatest life experience. I will not trade it in for any other work field. Becoming an assistant also supplies knowledge of the most intimate interactions of the natural processes, giving a glimpse of processes that are not easy to understand. At this Center the patients are Diabetes related. As I spend more time as an intern at this Clinic I was inspired by Dr. Willie Harrison who helped and gave hope to many of these people, had myself raise some questions on the concepts and wonder what it would be like to be a part of the North Belt Medical team or somewhat relate to this field. I believe that Medical Assistant program classes at Fortis Institute help gave me an opportunity to pursue my passion for helping those with medical problems and let me feel at ease on the first hand training at the North Belt Medical Clinic. At the North Belt Medical Clinic I learn to Answering phones and making appointments ordering supplies, greeting patients, pulling and filing patient charts, calling in or faxing prescriptions, converting charts to electronic charting. Hopefully I can take these skills I learn and better myself in life.…

In the morning, I followed the Charge Nurse Kristy. She was great at explaining to me everything she was doing and allowing me to watch and even help with everything she had to do to get the morning started. Rounds start on the unit at 1000, and Kristy had three different lists for each of the teams of doctors. She had to go through and highlight the patients that were on the unit, their code status and prism score, whom their nurse was, and the nurse’s phone number. She likes to have this finished by 0900 because at that time she has to attend the staffing meeting…
