A&P I Skeletal lecture 1
Chemistry: It is the science concerned with the atomic composition of substances, elements and their interactions, and the formation, decomposition and properties of molecules.
-Biological chemistry or Biochemistry is the biological or physiological chemistry of living organisms and of the chemical changes occurring therein.

Structure of Matter: All living and nonliving things are composed of matter.
Matter; is anything that occupies space and has mass. Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
-It includes all the solids, liquids and gasses in our surroundings as well as in our body.
Element: Is the simplest type of matter with unique chemical properties.
-To date, 112 elements are known, there 91 naturally occurring elements on earth, 24 of which play normal physiological roles in humans.
-Elements of the human body are grouped into two categories namely:
1) Major elements account for 99.9%
2) Trace elements account for 0.1%
-Of all these elements, about 96% of the weight of the body results from the elements such as O2, C, H and N.
-Several of these elements are classified as Minerals, which are inorganic elements that are extracted from the soil by plants and passed up the food chain to humans and other organisms.
-Minerals constitute about 4% of the human body weight. Nearly, ¾ of these are Ca and P, the rest is mainly Cl, Mg, K, Na and S.
Atom: An atom is the smallest particle of an element that has the chemical characteristics of that element.
-An element or an atom of that element often is represented by a symbol.
-Usually the first letter or letters of the element’s name is/are used. For example, C for Carbon, O for Oxygen, H for Hydrogen, Ca for Calcium, Cl for Chlorine, K for Potassium and Fe for Iron.
-The symbol is taken from English and Latin names.
Atomic Structure: The characteristics of living and nonliving matter results from the Structure, Organization and behavior of atoms.
-Atoms are divided into three major subatomic

9/22/2011 Basic Chemistry Why are we studying chemistry? • Biology has chemistry at its foundation Elements • All matter composed of basic substances called elements • Living organisms require about twenty of the known elements Together, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen make up 95% of the elements found in the body. Atoms • All elements made of tiny particles called atoms • Made up of: – Nucleus • contains protons (+ charge) and neutrons (no charge) – Outside the nucleus • Contains electrons (extremely small, - charge) – In an atom, # of protons =…

BIOLOGY STUDY GUIDE CHAPTER 4– THE CHEMICAL BASIS OF LIFE Matter = anything that takes up space and has mass (major types of matter = solid, liquid, and gas) Any type of matter is made of one or more elements. o Element = a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by regular chemical processes. (examples: gold, silver, mercury, etc.) There are approximately 25 elements necessary for life. • Examples: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, phosphorous, etc. • Trace elements = those elements that make up less than 0.01 percent of your body mass (examples: iodine, iron, copper, etc.) Compounds = a substance containing two or more elements; these elements are always present in this compound in the same ratio o For instance, water is a compound where hydrogen and oxygen are combined. The ratio of hydrogen to oxygen in water is always 2:1. (Remember that the chemical formula of water is H2O.) o Compounds have different characteristics than the elements that make them up. (Water is liquid at room temperature, but when hydrogen and oxygen are by themselves, they are gases at room temperature.) Atoms = smallest possible piece of an element o A better definition of an atom may be: the most basic unit of matter that cannot be broken down into smaller pieces by ordinary chemical methods. o This can be confusing, because when you read the above definition or when you start looking at the periodic table in class, is oxygen an atom or an element? o An element is essentially the same as an atom. Why do we bother with two different words? • An element is the most common version of an atom. The element you see on the periodic table for oxygen is the most common version of the oxygen atom that exists in nature. There are several different kinds of oxygen atoms (with different numbers of neutrons than the one found on the table), but they are not as commonly found in nature. All atoms are made of even smaller…

As far back, from my school years, as I can remember the word atom signified the smallest particle of matter. This is a very layman like attitude a scientist would abhor, because a scientist knows that this concept of ‘the smallest particle of matter ' has been changing rapidly over the years. The Greeks, it is said, coined the word “atom”. When this concept was articulated by the Greeks, there were no electronic equipments or high-tech labs to verify and further explore this “atom”. Technological advances have given today’s physicists the needed methods and means to explore matter in ways never possible in the early days of the atom.…
