Infants need two times the amount of nutrients than an adult. Breast feeding your baby is a very personal decision and can be very rewarding. The skill to breast feed may take a little time but is worth the effort. Colostrum is the first milk that a womens breast produces, also referred to as "Liquid Gold", this is great for a newborns health. It is high in antibodies and contains live cells that destroy bacteria and other substances that may be harmful to your babies health. After about the 6th day early milk is beginning to come in. This milk contains more sugar, water, and calories than colostrum. With in 2 weeks the mothers mature milk will come in. This contains less protein and more calories, carbohydrates and fat than colostrum and early milk. Infants who are breastfed do show to have less ear infections, less gas, less spitting up, and also fewer allergies. Breastfed babies also tend to have higher I Q scores. Breast feeding your infant can feel great to the infant and to the mother as well. Physical contact is important to a newborn, this will help form a great bond between mother and infant. This well help your infant feel more confident, secure and the infant will feel warm and comforted. The skin to skin contact will help boost the mothers oxytocin levels. This hormone will help the uterus contract faster and help the flow of the mothers milk. Mothers who breast feed tend to have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and postpartum depression.     Breastfeeding is an optimal approach in providing the nutritional requirements as well as well as providing immunity and positive long-term benefits. Breastfeeding provides the infant with all the necessary nutritional requirements for infants up to six months. For infants greater than six months in an addition with the introduction of solid foods is “an ideal feeding program” (American Dietetic Association, [ADA] 2009). Breastfeeding is lower in the United States than in other countries. Many organizations are in support and promote breastfeeding for example, Center for Disease Control and Healthy People with goals of increasing the rate of breastfeeding mothers. Multiple benefits result from breastfeeding for both infant and mother. The ADA (2009) list multiple benefits; for example, bonding between mother and infant, essential nutrients, immunity properties, decrease in allergies and other intolerances, decrease in sudden infant death and long term affect of decrease in type 1 and 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity and high cholesterol. There are also positive effects for the mother. For example, low risk in chronic diseases and other physical benefits as well as financial. The benefits are overwhelming for both mother and infant.
