CheckPoint: Patterns of Evolution

Review Ch. 2 of the text. Refer to Appendix B under Week Six, for more information on the different types of evolution. * Post a 200- to 300-word response to the following: * Humans shape their environment in ways that other organisms cannot. Are humans subject to the same pressures of natural selection as other organisms? Why? * Provide an example of convergent and divergent evolution, adaptive radiation, and co-evolution. Then, respond to the following:

* Choose one of the examples you provided and discuss the implications this example may have for future humans. * Cite outside sources in APA format if applicable.

Humans shape their environment in ways that other organisms cannot. Are humans subject to the same pressures of natural selection as other organisms? Why? In today’s world, humankind is not generally subjected to the similar pressures of natural selection as other organisms, because humans contain within themselves the capacity to form his or her surroundings, and can adjust these environments to meet their specific needs.

In addition, humans alter our environment to suit our needs rather than adapt to our environment based on environmental stressors. Due to this fact, we are unlikely to be affected by the pressures of natural selection. We will not likely be affected by further evolution.

Provide an example of convergent and divergent evolution, adaptive radiation, and co-evolution. Acording to chapter 2 of the text,

Sharks and dolphins are examples of convergent evolution. They belong to widely different vertebrate groups—sharks are fish, whereas dolphins are mammals—yet, they live in similar environments and have evolved similar characteristics. Note their similar overall shape and coloration, location and shape of dorsal (back) fins, and shape (but not orientation. ◆ Convergent evolution: are Unrelated species living in similar environments and facing

The basic idea of natural selection is that a population of organisms can change over the generations if individuals having certain heritable traits leave more offspring than other individuals. The result of natural selection is evolutionary adaptation, a prevalence of inherited characteristics that enhance organisms’ survival and reproduction in specific environments.…

The common goal of every species on planet Earth is to survive and spread it's genetic material in order to keep the species alive. Many species do this by adapting to the conditions they are given. People are constantly forced to adapt by superiors in order to fit an agenda. Micheal Pollan presents a similar case to this with apples, in which the fruit was genetically modified by humans to make them sweeter for mass consumption. The apple adhered to the genetic change that they underwent and were able to not only maintain their place on earth, but thrive and prosper. Similarly human beings go through the same process of being changed to fit a function in society and are forced to adapt, those successful can pass on their genetic makeup. In his book Micheal Pollan explains, "It has become much harder, in the past century, to tell where the garden leaves off and pure nature begins." In his point of view human involvement in adaption has changed the…

After spending time on the Galapagos Islands studying the origin of various species, former divinest Charles R. Darwin proposed the evolutionary theory of natural selection, a mechanism by which advantageous variations in a population are preserved while unfavorable variations are lost (Berkeley, 2008). As a result of these variations, some individuals are better acclimated to their environment than others. This results in the better-suited individuals outcompeting the less fortunate individuals for resources, and eventually causes genetic types to replace others. Natural selection is ultimately a process that can lead to the evolution of species (Zimmer, 2013).…

Natural selection, a process that has long been essential to survival, suggests that those who can adapt to environmental change will likely be able to more successfully survive, and hence procreate, over time. When considering the impact of natural selection in relation to our modern human race, we can argue that discoveries in science means we have many fewer actual “predators” of concern when it comes to survival. Access to food, regulation of our shelters, and medical advancements are but a handful of survival-related arenas over which mankind has taken control when it comes to environmental impact. Never the less, despite applications of scientific knowledge, the human species is currently still subject to natural selection in new ways.…
