The Bahamas to America – My Story

There is a country that can be found by plane just thirty minutes off the coast of Florida. Made up of seven hundred islands and cays, scattered over five thousand square miles. It’s people? - Indigenous, and known as some of the worlds friendliest. It’s motto? “It’s better in The Bahamas.” As the Boeing 747 taxied down the runway and rose into the sun-filled clouds, my mother glanced at me. “This is it Lawrence. Are you ready for Hampton?” I didn’t answer. Instead, I stared out the window. I could not help but to think about all the moments of adversity I had to overcome up to this point; the times where it felt like I would never leave “the rock.” My laid back, easy going, charmed filled island life was now behind me; and before me, laid the five lane, billboard lined highways of America. My final destination was of course, the red brick walls and buildings of Hampton University. And yes, who could forget that slogan every alumni I came into contact with back on the island uttered out by the mere mention of the schools name, “Hampton University – Our Home By The Sea.” Coming from a country known for its beaches those words were the only things that seemed familiar. One thought led to another. Now, the words spoken to me by my uncle, the elder of the family since the passing of my grandmother, “As soon as you get there, you should make a class schedule that you can study from. The key is to remain focus.” My potential was never a question growing up as a child. Everyone in my family seemed to be aware of my ability to procrastinate at times. Maybe it was just the nature of growing up on an island and the care-free attitude displayed towards life at times by “islanders”. Whatever it was, it was a potential road block. Truth be told, I did try; maybe not hard enough. Bad habits are hard to

Immigrants journeying to America by boat take in fresh air above deck. The vast majority of immigrants had to travel in the steerage class—dark, cramped below-deck quarters. The shipping companies that sold passengers steerage listed them as cargo on ship manifests. Many steerage passengers tried to escape the stifling conditions below deck by staying above deck…

In this document, Gottlieb basically describes the journey from Old England to New England. From what I read in the document the “push” (what compelled people to leave England and head to America) was poverty, misery, and lack of resources. Those who boarded on those ships were looking for a better life (the “push”).…

I am from German decent; I was born and raised in America a land made up of different creeds and races. This diversity is what makes us a superpower. Although, it seems that all new immigrants, do get the jobs nobody else wants. Our country is still a land of opportunity regardless of whom or where you came from. Any person with good work ethics and a little luck will succeed in what they do. I have chosen Levi Strauss, who was German born, uneducated, become not only successful, but a humanitarian as well, which I admired the most.…

    Sidney Poitier

“Sidney Poitier, who is he?” “Where is he from?” “What has he contributed to our Bahama land to receive such an honor in having the Paradise Island Bridge renamed after him?” These are just a few of the questions asked by some disgruntled Bahamians who were against the renaming of the Paradise Island Bridge on November 2nd, 2012. Many Bahamians were baffled due to the decision and wondered why Sir Sidney was chosen, instead of someone who is also noted as a local Bahamian icon. It became evident when the decision was made that many Bahamians, of all age groups, are not aware of who Sidney Poitier is and his contributions to The Bahamas, despite the books and documentaries that are available to the public. This is problematic in that it caused many of us to disregard Mr. Poitier from having Bahamian blood and being a contributor, through what we heard off the streets and the mere fact that we are not knowledgeable about him. I would like to inform the public about Sidney Poitier and his contributions to The Bahamas that brought about the reasons why he has been given such an honor.…

It was a cold morning on the 20 of December, that morning I woke up sleepy as a sloth. I didn’t have school that day and from my room I could smell the beans been cocked. The atmosphere at home didn’t feel right, I felt like if there was something going on and I was the only one that didn’t know. My mom and sister looked suspicious. My house was small, it had two bedrooms and one bathroom. My sister got on her blue BMX bike and went out, I didn’t know where she was going but she went faster than a missile. Out of nowhere people started coming, more and more people, I counted 27 people including an 8 years old buy that fall asleep as soon as he got to my house. I was freak out and ran to my mom and I ask her, mom what’s going on who are these people, and she told me, my love we are going to America.…

If you could pick your dream vacation, where would it be? Which city, state, or country? Mine would be to the beautiful country of Jamaica. As I stated at the beginning of the semester, I am Jamaican. I was not born there, however, Jamaican is my heritage and both of my parents were born there, so technically being born in the U.S doesn’t have an effect on my background or culture. There are many reasons why I know I would want my dream vacation there, but are you aware of Jamaica’s culture, language, its landscape or anything of the sort? By the end of this speech, you will know these things and will probably consider taking a vacation to Jamaica.…

The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and The Republic of Haiti are two very close Caribbean islands. However their relationship throughout the ages has been a challenging one. In the 18th century, due to economic factors, many Haitian slaves and slave owners moved over to The Bahamas (Fielding, Balance, Scriven, McDonald, & Johnson, 2008). This type of immigration remained constant throughout the 19th and 20th century (Fielding et. al., 2008). However, in the 1950’s the two countries experienced major economic changes: The Bahamas good (flourishing of tourism industry) and Haiti bad (Leadership by the Duvalier Dictator). From the 1950’s until present times countless numbers of Haitians flock to The Bahamas for a better life for them and their children. The events of this era set an everlasting tone for the relationship between the two countries. Over the decades the increase Haitian population in The Bahamas has created what is known as “The Haitian Problem”: a large population of illegal immigrants, who are said to stress out the Bahamian economic system (McWeeney, 1994).…

The Bahamas is in danger of being overtaken by foreigners. Although this statement is fallacious in context, many Bahamians today would not necessarily disagree with it. That, inevitably though, is a situation that the Bahamas can be faced with if educated Bahamians continue to migrate to other countries at a high rate. This migration, better known by the term ‘Brain Drain,’ is and will always be a part of society where educated people leave their native developing countries and seek out more wealthy, opportunistic countries. As noted in the article Reassessing the Impacts of Brain Drain on Developing Countries, “nearly one in 10 tertiary-educated adults born in the developing world — between a third and half of the developing world 's science and technology personnel — now live in the developed world” (Sriskandarajah). Although the idea of moving to a more wealthy country can be beneficial to the Bahamians that are migrating personally, there are some problems that can arise in the Bahamian society as a result of this. When educated Bahamians decide to live in countries outside the Bahamas, it can hamper development in the country, effect family relationships, and can leave the country vulnerable to foreign manipulation.…

The Bahamas is a great nation that has overcome many obstacles in the past; there are many men and women that have sacrificed a lot for this country to be what it is today. However, according to Nicolette Bethel in her text “On Independence”, she states “instead of aiming for stars, we turn our backs on them because to reach that high might cost too much”. Bethel’s quote is expressing the lack of interest to succeed and also the fear of failure in Bahamians. In today’s society Bahamians are afraid to try because they are afraid they might fail. Our forefathers tried no matter what the outcome would be and were always encouraged to preserve. Based on Bethel’s editorial our forefathers fought for what they wanted and I quote “In the 1950s and 1960s a group of men and women began a revolution that would change the face of the Bahamas for good by imagining that black people could rule themselves”- On Independence. As a country we must set high goals, dreams and standards for our people to shadow or to contemplate. Our forefathers dreamt of a more urbanized and enhanced country. However, we have let them down because many of us are too dependent on the government; several students aren’t taking advantage of the opportunities given and because of the broken family structure.…
