2.04 Declaring Independence
1. What are some of the key ideas of the letters between John and Abigail Adams?
The thing that impressed me most about their correspondence, was that their passion for Liberty was nearly matched by their passion for one another.
2. What does Abigail Adams threaten to do if women are not given representation in the new laws of the land?
If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.
3. What other groups, besides women, does John Adams claim are demanding more freedoms from the government? What do these groups have in common with women?
The groups that demand more freedom were the Negroes, Indians, children and apprentices. They share something common with women because they all are demanding the same thing, which is freedom and equality.
4. How do you think Abigail Adams felt when she read her husband's letter?
Probably feelings of betrayal and foolishness.
5. John Adams was on the committee to help write the Declaration of Independence. The second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, states that: "We hold these truths to be self–evident: that all men are created equal...". Who do you think John Adams and the other signers of the Declaration of Independence were referring to by "all men"?
By "all men are created equal" they meant that every American's natural rights are equal and the government should have no role in inhibiting those rights.
6. Was it their intention to include women? Slaves? Native Americans?
Clearly not, If they had, Women would have got the vote, The slaves would have been freed, Native Americans wouldn't have been slaughtered and had their lands stolen as a matter of government policy.
7. What are some of your thoughts and reactions to these letters?
I think it was selfish not to include women into voting or anything
